Overview

About the author: Nagarjuna (1911-1998) was one of the most important Hindi poets of the modern era, born in Tarauni village of Darbhanga district, Bihar. His real name was Vaidyanath Mishra, and he wrote in Maithili under the pen name 'Yatri' as well. Deeply influenced by Marxist thought and the freedom struggle, he led a wandering, mendicant-like life and is often called a 'people's poet' (jan-kavi). His poetry blends folk simplicity with sharp political satire and tender humanism. Major works include 'Yugdhara', 'Satrange Pankhonwali', 'Hazar-Hazar Bahonwali' and the novel 'Balchanma'. His verse celebrates ordinary people, labour, nature and the soil of India.

Your dust-covered little body brushed against me, and at once my body and mind grew restless with joy. You touched me, and I touched you in return — and so what if my mind, once dusty and dull, has now become a little soiled?

Leaving the pond behind, lotuses seem to bloom in my hut — as if your smile were a lotus. I am a wanderer, long away from home; how shall I, a stranger, introduce myself to you? Yet I am blessed, kissing you again and again with a thrilled and joyous heart.

You gaze at me as though enchanted; but it is I who am truly enchanted, for your smile is like the falling flowers of the shefali (harsingar). When you shyly stole your eyes away from mine, and then bashfully looked again, I gazed at you unblinkingly. You bent a little, glanced at me from the corner of your eyes, and turning towards me you smiled — and it felt as though freshly washed drops of dew had fallen upon me, cleansing and refreshing my whole being.

📝 Summary
This unit contains two poems by the people's poet Nagarjuna. In 'Yah Danturit Muskaan', the poet describes his overwhelming joy on seeing the toothed (danturit) smile of a small child. Having lived as a long-absent wanderer, far from home, he sees the child for the first time; the child does not recognise him. Yet the innocent, dust-covered smile melts the poet's hard, dull heart, makes it tender, and fills him with delight — he says such a smile could put life even into a corpse. He compares the smile to lotuses blooming in his hut, to falling shefali flowers, and to fresh dew. He blesses both the child and the mother whose love made this 'flower' bloom even on a 'dry branch' like himself. The second poem 'Fasal' answers the question 'What is a crop?' The poet says a crop is not the gift of one or two rivers, nor the labour of one or two hands, but the magic of countless rivers' waters and the dignity of the touch of millions and crores of working hands. It is the transformation of sunlight, the shy grace of the dancing wind, and the quality of the brown-black-fragrant soil. Both poems celebrate love, labour, nature and ordinary life.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea is that the simplest, most ordinary things of life — an innocent child's smile and the crop in the field — hold the deepest beauty and meaning. The first poem shows how a baby's pure smile can transform a hard, sorrowful heart and give it new life, celebrating the power of love and innocence. The second poem reveals that food (the crop) is the result of collective human labour and the cooperation of nature, teaching us to value both the toil of farmers and the gifts of rivers, soil, sun and wind.

The title 'Yah Danturit Muskaan aur Fasal' names the two poems of this unit. 'Yah Danturit Muskaan' (This Toothed Smile) is apt because the entire poem revolves around the freshly-toothed smile of a small child and the joy it gives the poet — the word 'danturit' (newly grown teeth) captures the exact image at the heart of the poem. 'Fasal' (The Crop) is fitting because the whole poem defines and celebrates what a crop truly is — the product of countless rivers, hands, soil, sun and wind. Both titles directly and accurately point to the central subject of each poem.

The poet calls himself a long-time wanderer because he lives far from home and so the child does not recognise him.
The poet is a long-absent wanderer whose heart has grown hard, dull and joyless due to constant travel and hardship. When he sees the innocent, dust-covered, toothed smile of a small child, his entire being is transformed. His body and mind grow restless with joy, and he declares that such a smile could breathe life even into a corpse. The dust from the child's body that soils his mind he counts as good fortune, not as a stain. He sees the smile as lotuses blooming in his poor hut, as falling shefali flowers, and as fresh dew washing over him. Though he is a stranger whom the child does not know, the pure smile instantly bonds them in love. Thus the child's smile melts the poet's hardened heart, fills it with tenderness, gratitude and new life, and makes him bless both the child and its mother. The poem beautifully shows the power of innocence and love to renew even a weary human heart.

In 'Fasal', Nagarjuna answers the question 'What is a crop?' and through it conveys a deep message about the dignity of labour and the gifts of nature. He firmly says that a crop is not the work of one or two rivers, nor of one or two hands; rather it is the magic of the waters of countless rivers and the dignity of the touch of lakhs and crores of working hands. By repeating 'ek ke nahin, do ke nahin', he stresses that food is the fruit of collective human labour, especially that of the toiling farmers, who are usually ignored. At the same time, he shows that nature is an equal partner: the crop is the transformation of sunlight, the shy grace of the dancing wind, and the quality of the brown-black-fragrant soil. Thus the poem teaches that every grain of food is born from the cooperation of human sweat and nature's bounty. Its message is that we must respect both the labour of common people and the gifts of rivers, soil, sun and wind, and never take our food for granted.

When the child's dust-covered body touches the poet, his body and mind become restless with joy; he feels a deep, overwhelming happiness and considers even the soiling of his mind by the dust to be his good fortune.
