Gerrard and the Intruder are sharply contrasted, and it is their difference in character that decides the play's outcome. Gerrard is an intelligent, witty and resourceful playwright. He is calm under pressure and never loses his composure even with a gun pointed at him. His humour, self-control and quick thinking allow him to invent a clever story on the spot and trap his enemy. The Intruder, on the other hand, is a dangerous but shallow criminal. He is armed and outwardly confident, boasting about his foolproof plan to kill Gerrard and steal his identity. He speaks in a theatrical, melodramatic style and believes himself to be in complete control. However, he lacks true intelligence and is overconfident, gullible and easily frightened. The moment Gerrard tells him a convincing lie, the Intruder's confidence collapses and he is fooled by exactly the kind of deception he intended to use. Thus, the Intruder relies on force and his weapon, while Gerrard relies on his mind. Because brains prove stronger than brute force, it is the calm, clever Gerrard who triumphs, and the boastful, gullible Intruder who is finally locked in the cupboard and handed over to the police. Their contrasting natures make the outcome both believable and satisfying.
