The hood of the snake was spread out, only about three or four inches away from his face. On a hot summer night, the young doctor returned to his small rented room after dinner, lit a kerosene lamp and sat before a mirror, lost in admiring his own face and planning his future. Suddenly a snake fell from the tiled roof onto his shoulder and coiled itself around his left arm, its spread hood only inches from his face. The doctor was paralysed with fear and sat as still as a stone image, not daring to move or breathe freely. In that terrifying moment, the proud, self-important man came face to face with death and realised how utterly helpless and small a human being truly is. All his vanity vanished, and for the first time he thought of God and silently prayed. After a long, tense wait the snake slid onto the table and, fascinated by its own reflection in the mirror, gave the doctor a chance to creep out and escape. The fear of that night thus transformed his outlook: it stripped away his pride, made him humble, and taught him that human plans and self-admiration mean nothing before the sudden forces of fate. Fear, in this way, became the means of his self-realisation.
