📖 Stanza-wise Explanation

It takes much time to kill a tree,
Not a simple jab of the knife
Will do it. It has grown
Slowly consuming the earth,
Rising out of it, feeding
Upon its crust, absorbing
Years of sunlight, air, water,
And out of its leperous hide
Sprouting leaves.

The poet begins with a blunt, almost clinical statement: killing a tree is not quick or easy. A single thrust of a knife cannot accomplish it. Over many years the tree has grown by slowly drawing nourishment from the earth, rising up out of the soil and feeding on its crust. It has absorbed years of sunlight, air and water, and even out of its rough, diseased-looking ('leperous') bark it keeps sprouting fresh leaves. The tree's long, patient growth is the very source of its strength.

So hack and chop
But this alone wont do it.
Not so much pain will do it.
The bleeding bark will heal
And from close to the ground
Will rise curled green twigs,
Miniature boughs
Which if unchecked will expand again
To former size.

You may hack and chop at the tree, but mere cutting will not kill it; even great pain will not finish it. The 'bleeding bark' — the wound made by the axe — will heal itself. From close to the ground new curled green twigs will sprout. These tiny boughs, if left unchecked, will grow back and expand once again to the tree's former size. The tree's remarkable power of self-healing and regeneration makes superficial wounds useless against it.

No,
The root is to be pulled out —
Out of the anchoring earth;
It is to be roped, tied,
And pulled out — snapped out
Or pulled out entirely,
Out from the earth-cave,
And the strength of the tree exposed,
The source, white and wet,
The most sensitive, hidden
For years inside the earth.

The poet asserts emphatically — 'No' — that there is only one sure way. The root must be pulled out completely from the earth that anchors and holds it. The tree must be roped, tied and dragged out, snapped or pulled out entirely from the 'earth-cave' where it lay hidden. Only then is the real strength of the tree — its root, the white and wet 'source' of its life — exposed. This source, the most sensitive and vital part, has been hidden and protected deep inside the earth for years.

Then the matter
Of scorching and choking
In sun and air,
Browning, hardening,
Twisting, withering,
And then it is done.

Once the root has been wrenched out and exposed, the final stage follows. The uprooted root is left to scorch and choke in the sun and air. Deprived of the earth, it slowly turns brown, hardens, twists and withers away. Only when the root has dried up and died in this way is the killing of the tree truly complete — 'and then it is done.'

📝 Summary

In 'On Killing a Tree', Gieve Patel describes, in a calm and detached tone, the surprising difficulty of killing a tree. A simple cut of a knife or repeated hacking and chopping cannot destroy it, because the tree has grown slowly over many years by absorbing earth, sunlight, air and water, and it possesses a powerful capacity to heal its wounds and grow back to its original size. The poet explains that the only sure way to kill a tree is to pull out its root entirely from the earth, expose the white, wet, sensitive source of its life that lay hidden for years, and then let it scorch, brown, harden, twist and wither in the sun and air. Only then is the tree finally and truly dead. Through this seemingly factual 'instruction', the poem becomes a powerful symbol of the resilience of life and an ironic comment on the violence and cruelty humans inflict on nature.

💡 Central Idea

The central idea of the poem is the extraordinary resilience and tenacity of life. A tree cannot be killed by superficial wounds because life clings on stubbornly and heals itself; it can be destroyed only by attacking its very root and source. At a deeper level, the poem ironically exposes the deliberate, methodical cruelty with which human beings destroy nature, and warns us about the seriousness of such destruction.

🎯 Themes

  • The resilience and tenacity of life: The poem's foremost theme is the unconquerable will to live. The tree heals its bleeding bark, sprouts new twigs and grows back to its former size, showing that life resists destruction and fights back with remarkable strength.

  • Man's cruelty towards nature: The poem is a sharp comment on the deliberate, calculated violence humans inflict on the natural world. The methodical 'instructions' for killing the tree highlight how casually and systematically people destroy nature.

  • The importance of roots and source: The poem stresses that true strength lies not in what is visible (trunk, branches, leaves) but in the hidden root and source. Destroying the root destroys the whole being — a truth that applies symbolically to all living things and even to human culture and identity.

  • Nature versus human destruction / ecological awareness: Beneath the surface, the poem raises an environmental concern, urging readers to recognise the value of trees and the gravity of cutting them down, thus appealing for the protection of nature.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

The poem conveys that life is incredibly resilient and cannot be destroyed easily — it heals, regenerates and resists. At the same time, it carries a moral and ecological warning: human beings are capable of cold, deliberate cruelty towards nature, and the killing of a tree is an act of grave violence, not a trivial chore. We must respect the strength of living things and protect, rather than thoughtlessly destroy, the natural world.

Justification of the Title

The title 'On Killing a Tree' is apt and deliberately provocative. The word 'killing' — normally used for living creatures, not plants — immediately elevates the tree to the status of a living being and frames its destruction as an act of murder. The phrase 'On Killing' gives the poem the tone of a clinical, step-by-step manual or instruction, which makes the underlying cruelty all the more chilling and ironic. The title thus prepares the reader for both the literal subject (how hard it is to kill a tree) and the deeper meaning (the resilience of life and man's violence against nature), making it perfectly suited to the poem.

🪄 Literary Devices

Personification — “"The bleeding bark will heal"”

The tree is given human attributes — it 'bleeds' and 'heals' like a wounded living creature, making the act of cutting it appear as cruel as harming a person.

Metaphor — “"leperous hide", "earth-cave"”

The tree's rough bark is compared to a diseased ('leperous') skin or 'hide', and the deep hollow in the soil that holds the root is called an 'earth-cave', enriching the imagery without using 'like' or 'as'.

Imagery — “"The source, white and wet"; "Browning, hardening, / Twisting, withering"”

Vivid visual and tactile images make the reader almost see the white, wet root and watch it slowly turn brown, harden, twist and wither, intensifying the physical reality of the killing.

Alliteration — “"hack and chop"... "Twisting, withering"; "white and wet"”

The repetition of initial consonant sounds (and close repeated sounds) adds rhythm and emphasis, reinforcing the harsh, mechanical action of cutting and the drying of the root.

Q. What does the poet mean by 'the bleeding bark'?

'The bleeding bark' refers to the wound made on the tree's bark when it is hacked and chopped. By calling it 'bleeding', the poet personifies the tree, comparing the oozing sap to blood and suggesting that the tree, like a living being, is hurt yet able to heal itself.

Q. What is the only sure way to kill a tree completely?

The only sure way is to pull the root out completely from the earth that anchors it. Once the white, wet, sensitive source is uprooted and exposed, it must be left to scorch, brown, harden, twist and wither in the sun and air — only then is the tree truly dead.

Q. What does the 'root' symbolise in the poem?

The root symbolises the true source and strength of life — the hidden, sensitive core from which all vitality flows. It suggests that the real power of any living being (or even of culture and identity) lies not in its visible parts but deep within, and that destroying this source means destroying the whole.

Long Answer Questions
Q. How does Gieve Patel use a calm, matter-of-fact tone to convey the cruelty of killing a tree? Discuss the irony in the poem 'On Killing a Tree'.

Throughout the poem Gieve Patel adopts the detached, instructional tone of a manual or recipe, as if patiently explaining a technical procedure: first hack and chop, then rope and pull out the root, then let it scorch and wither. This calm, clinical voice — fitting for a poet who was also a doctor — is precisely what makes the poem so disturbing. The very ordinariness with which he lists the steps of destruction forces the reader to confront the violence usually ignored in everyday acts like cutting down a tree. Herein lies the central irony: an act of brutal killing is described without anger or emotion, yet the absence of emotion heightens, rather than lessens, the horror. Words like 'bleeding bark', 'pain', 'killing' and 'the strength of the tree exposed' personify the tree and remind us that we are destroying a living, feeling being. The contrast between the gentle, methodical tone and the cruelty of the deed compels the reader to reflect on humanity's casual, systematic violence against nature, and to recognise both the dignity and resilience of the tree and the gravity of its destruction.

Q. 'On Killing a Tree' is as much about the resilience of life as it is about destruction. Discuss with reference to the poem.

Although the poem's title and surface concern is how to kill a tree, its deeper subject is the astonishing resilience and tenacity of life. The poet shows that the tree cannot be destroyed by ordinary means precisely because it has earned its strength through years of patient growth, slowly consuming the earth and absorbing sunlight, air and water. When it is hacked and chopped, its 'bleeding bark' heals, and curled green twigs and miniature boughs rise again near the ground, growing back to the tree's former size if left unchecked. This power of self-healing and regeneration is the very embodiment of life's will to survive. It is only by attacking the hidden source — the white, wet, sensitive root that lay protected for years inside the earth — and then leaving it to scorch and wither, that the tree can finally be killed. In stressing how much effort, planning and violence are needed to overcome the tree, Patel actually celebrates the indomitable strength of life. Thus, while the poem describes destruction, its lasting impression is one of admiration for nature's resilience and a quiet warning about the seriousness of destroying it.

'The anchoring earth' is the soil that holds the tree firmly and steadily in place, like an anchor. 'The earth-cave' is the deep hollow within the soil where the root lies hidden and protected. Both phrases stress how deeply and securely the root is embedded in the ground.

Q. Why does the poet call the source 'white and wet' and 'the most sensitive'?

The root, hidden for years inside the earth, is 'white and wet' because it has never been exposed to sunlight and stays moist underground. It is called 'the most sensitive' because it is the tender, vital source of the tree's life and strength; harming it is fatal, unlike harming the tougher, visible parts.

Q. Identify and explain one literary device used in this stanza.

Repetition is used in the phrase 'pulled out... snapped out... pulled out entirely... Out from the earth-cave'. The insistent repetition of 'out' emphasises the great force and effort required to wrench the deeply rooted tree from the earth. (Metaphor — 'earth-cave' — is also acceptable.)

'pulled out... snapped out... pulled out entirely... Out from the earth-cave' वाक्यांश में पुनरावृत्ति (repetition) का प्रयोग हुआ है।
