About the author: Nazeer Akbarabadi (born Wali Muhammad, 1735-1830) was a great Urdu poet who lived in Agra, which is why he came to be known as 'Akbarabadi' (Agra was earlier called Akbarabad). He is often called the 'father of Nazm' (poem) in Urdu poetry. Unlike the poets of his age who wrote mostly about love, kings and grand themes, Nazeer wrote about the common man and everyday life — the bear-tamer, the watermelon, festivals like Holi and Diwali, money, poverty, and ordinary human beings. His language is simple, full of the spoken idiom of the bazaar, and easily understood by ordinary people. Because of this he became the poet of the masses. He wrote a large number of poems but most of his work was lost; what survives still reflects his deep humanity, his sympathy for the poor, and his keen observation of human nature.

In this world the one who is a king — he too is a man, and the poor man and the beggar — he too is a man. The wealthy and the penniless — both are men. The one who is eating delicious food is a man, and the one chewing dry crusts of bread is also a man. The poet shows that despite enormous differences in status and fortune, all are equally human — 'aadmi'.

📝 Summary
In 'Aadmi Naama' (An Account of Man), Nazeer Akbarabadi reflects on the many faces and forms of the human being. He says that the king and the beggar, the rich and the poor, the one who feasts and the one who chews dry bread — all are equally 'aadmi' (man). The poet observes that man builds the mosque, becomes the imam and reads the Quran, but man also steals the worshippers' shoes — both virtue and vice spring from the same human being. One man lays down his life for another, while another man kills with the sword; one cries out in distress and another runs to help him. From the noble to the mean, from the king to the minister, all of society's roles are performed by man. Thus the poet underlines that good and evil, high and low, are not separate species — they are all contained within the single word 'aadmi'. The human being is the maker of his own dignity and the cause of his own disgrace.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea of the poem is that all human beings, irrespective of their wealth, status or conduct, belong to the single category of 'man'. Both goodness and wickedness, kindness and cruelty, are different aspects of the same human nature. The poet asserts the essential oneness of humankind while honestly acknowledging the contradictions that live within man himself.

🧭 Message & Title

At the same time it reminds us that the capacity for both nobility and evil lies within every person; therefore we should consciously choose goodness, compassion and humanity, and recognise the dignity present in every man.

The title 'Aadmi Naama' literally means 'an account (or record) of man'. The Persian word 'naama' refers to a written record, biography or chronicle (as in 'Akbarnama'). The title is perfectly apt because the entire poem is a chronicle of the human being in all his varied forms — king and beggar, saint and thief, saviour and killer. Every line returns to the single word 'aadmi', making man the sole subject of the poem. Thus the poem genuinely reads like a 'register' or portrait-gallery of humanity, fully justifying its name.

🪄 Literary Devices
The phrase 'so hai wah bhi aadmi' (he too is a man) and the word 'aadmi' are repeated again and again at the end of the lines. This repetition powerfully drives home the central idea of human oneness and gives the poem its rhythmic, incantatory force.

Opposite pairs are placed side by side — king and beggar, rich and poor, one who feasts and one who chews dry bread, one who saves life and one who kills. This contrast highlights the wide range of human conditions held within the one word 'man'.

In 'Aadmi Naama' Nazeer Akbarabadi presents the human being as a bundle of contradictions, yet essentially one. On one side stands the king, the wealthy man and the one who eats rich food; on the other stand the beggar, the destitute and the man chewing dry bread — yet both are equally 'aadmi'. In the mosque it is man who builds it, leads the prayer and reads the Quran, but it is also man who steals the worshippers' shoes and man who watches the thief. One man sacrifices his life for another, while another kills with the sword; one man insults another by pulling off his turban, while one cries for help and another runs to give it. From the noble to the mean, from the king to the minister, every role is played by man himself. Through these sharp contrasts the poet shows that both virtue and vice, kindness and cruelty, greatness and meanness, live within the same human nature. His ultimate message is humanistic and democratic: we should not divide people by wealth or status, for all are fundamentally equal human beings; and since the seeds of both good and evil lie within each of us, we must consciously choose the path of goodness, compassion and humanity, and uphold the dignity that the word 'aadmi' deserves.

Nazeer Akbarabadi is called the poet of the common man because, unlike the poets of his time who wrote about kings, romance and grand themes, he chose the ordinary human being and everyday life as his subject — bear-tamers, watermelons, festivals, money and poverty. He wrote in the simple, spoken language of the bazaar, so that even ordinary people could understand and enjoy his verse. In 'Aadmi Naama' this character is clearly visible. The very subject is the plain 'aadmi' — not a hero or a king but man in general. He gives equal space to the beggar and the king, to the one eating delicacies and the one chewing crusts. He notices small, real-life details like the stealing of shoes outside a mosque and the pulling off of a turban. His diction is the everyday Urdu-Persian of common speech. By dissolving all rank and grandeur into the single humble word 'aadmi', the poet expresses his deep sympathy for ordinary people and his faith in human equality — which is exactly why he is loved as the poet of the masses.
