Class 9 · Hindi (Sparsh) · Sparsh · Poem

Overview

📝 Summary

'Ek Phool Ki Chaah' (The Desire for a Flower) by Siyaramsharan Gupt is a deeply moving poem that exposes the cruelty of untouchability. During a terrible epidemic believed to be the wrath of the Goddess, a poor untouchable man's little daughter, Sukhia, falls ill. Before falling sick she had longed for a single flower offered as the Goddess's prasad. The disease worsens and the innocent child dies, her small wish unfulfilled. To honour her last desire, the grief-stricken father enters the temple to bring her a flower. But the priests and the crowd, recognising him as an untouchable, accuse him of polluting the temple and the Goddess, beat him mercilessly, drag him out, and have him imprisoned for seven days by the magistrate. In prison he laments that he could not fulfil even the tiny last wish of his dead child. Through this heart-rending tale the poet attacks the inhuman practice of untouchability and the hollowness of a religion that denies a grieving father even a single flower for his dying daughter.

💡 Central Idea

The central idea of the poem is a powerful condemnation of untouchability and casteism. It shows how the rigid, inhuman caste system robs human beings of their basic dignity and love — a poor father is beaten and jailed merely for trying to fulfil his dying daughter's innocent wish for a single flower, simply because he was born an 'untouchable'. The poem questions a society and a religion that places caste-based purity above human compassion.

🎯 Themes

  • The evil of untouchability and casteism: The poem's foremost theme is the cruel, dehumanising practice of untouchability that treats fellow human beings as impure and denies them entry into places of worship.

  • Parental love and unfulfilled longing: The deep, tender love of a father for his daughter and the unbearable pain of failing to fulfil even her smallest, last wish forms the emotional heart of the poem.

  • Hollowness of religious bigotry: The poem exposes how religion, in the hands of bigoted priests, becomes heartless — protecting an idol's 'purity' while crushing genuine human grief and faith.

  • Social injustice and human equality: It is a protest against social injustice and a call for equality, asserting that all human beings — high or low born — are equal in their love, grief and right to faith.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

The poem gives the powerful message that no human being is high or low by birth, and that distinctions of caste and untouchability are inhuman and shameful. True religion lies in compassion, love and humanity — not in keeping a so-called 'lower' person away from God. We must root out social evils like untouchability and treat every person with equal dignity and kindness.

Justification of the Title

The title 'Ek Phool Ki Chaah' (The Desire for a Flower) is perfectly apt. The entire poem revolves around the single, innocent wish of little Sukhia to hold one flower offered as the Goddess's prasad. This tiny desire becomes the thread that ties the whole tragedy together — it is for this one flower that the father braves the temple, is branded an untouchable, beaten and imprisoned, while the wish itself dies unfulfilled with the child. The 'one flower' symbolises both the purity of a child's longing and the cruelty of a society that could not grant even so small a thing. The title thus captures the poem's emotional core and its central irony.

The poem is a powerful indictment of the inhuman practice of untouchability. A poor, so-called 'untouchable' father loses his little daughter Sukhia to a deadly epidemic. Her one innocent wish before dying was to receive a flower offered to the Goddess. Out of pure love, the grieving father enters the temple to bring that flower for his dead child. Instead of compassion, he is met with cruelty: the priests accuse him of polluting the temple and the Goddess merely by his presence, the crowd beats him mercilessly and drags him out, and the magistrate jails him for seven days. The poet shows the bitter irony that a father's tender love and a child's pure faith are crushed in the name of 'religious purity'. The episode reveals how casteism strips human beings of dignity, denies them even a place in God's house, and replaces compassion with heartless rituals. Through this heart-rending tale, Siyaramsharan Gupt fiercely condemns untouchability and pleads for a society based on equality, love and humanity.

Q. Describe the character and feelings of the father in the poem 'Ek Phool Ki Chaah'.

The father in the poem is the central voice through whom the whole tragedy is narrated. He is a deeply loving and protective parent, who repeatedly forbids Sukhia from going out for fear of the epidemic. Though he scolds and hardens his heart when she insists on the flower, his sternness comes only from concern for her safety. When she falls fatally ill, he is overwhelmed with anxiety and grief. After her death, his love proves greater than fear or self-respect: to fulfil her last wish, he dares to enter the temple though he knows the social danger of being an 'untouchable'. He bears the priests' insults, the crowd's brutal beating and the magistrate's harsh punishment without complaint. In prison, his deepest pain is not his own suffering but his failure to grant his daughter even one small flower. Thus the father emerges as a tender, devoted, self-sacrificing and dignified human being — a symbol of pure parental love crushed by an unjust social system.

Q. What does the word 'ललचा' mean here, and what does it reveal about Sukhia?

'Lalcha' means to long for or be strongly tempted. It reveals Sukhia's innocent, childlike yearning and deep faith — her wish is small and pure, yet very dear to her.

Q. Why does this small wish become significant in the poem?

This tiny wish becomes the heart of the whole tragedy. It is for this one flower that the father later enters the temple, is branded an untouchable, beaten and imprisoned, while the wish itself dies unfulfilled with the child — highlighting the cruelty of casteism.
