Overview

📖 Detailed Explanation
The story opens with the narrator reflecting on human nature. He says that to understand or 'read' a person, one must rise to that person's level of life. Just as we need permission to step into the house of an important person, in the same way, to truly understand a man's heart, we must come down to his circumstances. The narrator's mind is occupied with this thought because of a scene he has just witnessed in the market.

In the bazaar the narrator sees an old man, a poor farmer, sitting on the ground beside a small heap of muskmelons (kharbooze) which he wants to sell. The old man is not selling them in the usual way of a vendor calling out his wares. Instead, his head is bowed between his knees and he is sobbing silently. His clothes show his poverty; his condition reveals deep grief. People passing by treat him with contempt rather than sympathy.

The people gathered around the old man pass harsh judgements. Some say he has no shame, that even in such grief he has come to do business; others mock him. A well-dressed man complains that such low-caste people have no sense of decency. The crowd assumes the old man is greedy and heartless to be selling melons in this state, but no one bothers to ask the real reason for his weeping.

The narrator, however, is curious and troubled. He wants to know the truth, so he inquires from a nearby shopkeeper. Bit by bit, the heartbreaking story comes out. The old man's young son, his only earning support, had gone to the field to gather these very melons. There a snake bit him. The family tried village remedies and an ojha (witch-doctor) to cast out the snake's poison through chants and ritual, but nothing could save the young man, and he died.

The son left behind a young widow, small grandchildren and the helpless old parents. The custom of the community required that the dead body be mourned and that, on the thirteenth day after death, a death-feast (kriya-karm) be performed, for which money is needed. The family had nothing to eat, no grain in the house, and the daughter-in-law was burning with fever. The old man was bound by debt and obligation. To arrange even a little money for the funeral rites, for the borrowed money, and to feed his starving grandchildren, the old man had no choice but to drag himself to the market and sell the melons his dead son had picked.

To deepen the irony, the narrator recalls a contrasting scene. A short while ago, when the wife (the daughter-in-law) of a rich man of his own neighbourhood had died, that lady mourned in great comfort. She did not eat for some days, but doctors examined her, perfumes and rosewater were sprinkled on her bed, and the whole town spoke of her grief with respect. She had the means and the social standing to mourn freely and to be pitied.

The narrator concludes with the central, piercing thought of the story: that rich, respectable lady had the 'right to mourn' — the luxury of grieving in peace — because she was wealthy. But this poor old man, crushed by hunger and poverty, did not even have the right to grieve over the death of his own son. His empty stomach and his starving family forced him to set aside his sorrow and earn a living. Grief, the narrator realises with bitter clarity, is also a privilege — and the poor are denied even the right to their own sorrow.

📝 Summary
'Dukh Ka Adhikar' (The Right to Grieve) by Yashpal is a sensitive story that exposes social inequality through the contrast of two mourners. The narrator sees a poor old man sitting in the market trying to sell muskmelons while sobbing, and the crowd condemns him as shameless and greedy. On inquiry, the narrator learns the tragic truth: the old man's only son had died of a snakebite while plucking those very melons. With a fevered widowed daughter-in-law, starving grandchildren, debts and the cost of the thirteenth-day rites to bear, the grief-stricken old man was forced to sell the melons to survive. The narrator contrasts this with a rich neighbour's daughter-in-law who, on a death in her family, mourned in comfort with doctors, perfumes and the town's sympathy. The story drives home a painful truth — even grief is a luxury that only the rich can afford; the poor are denied the very right to mourn their dead.

💡 Central Idea
The story's central idea is that grief itself is divided by class. The rich can afford to mourn their dead in comfort and earn society's sympathy, while crushing poverty robs the poor of even the basic human right to grieve — for them survival comes before sorrow.

🎯 Themes
Class inequality and the divide between rich and poor: The story sharply contrasts the comfortable mourning of a wealthy woman with the helpless plight of a poor old man, showing how even sorrow is unequally distributed in an unjust society.

Poverty robs human dignity: Crushing poverty forces the old man to suppress his grief and earn a living, denying him the dignity of mourning his own son's death.

Empathy versus prejudice: The crowd judges the old man harshly without knowing his story, while the narrator's empathy and curiosity reveal the truth — teaching that we must understand a person's circumstances before judging them.

🧭 Message & Title
The story teaches us to look beyond outward appearances and judge no one without understanding their circumstances. It awakens compassion for the poor and exposes the cruel injustice of a society in which even the right to grieve depends on wealth. True humanity lies in feeling another's pain, not in condemning them.

The title 'Dukh Ka Adhikar' (The Right to Grieve) is perfectly apt and ironic. It highlights the story's core idea that grieving is a 'right' which, shockingly, is not available to all equally. The rich woman could exercise her right to mourn in comfort, but the poor old man was denied even this most basic human right because his hunger and poverty came first. The title forces the reader to question a social order in which sorrow itself becomes a privilege of the wealthy, making it the most fitting summary of the story's meaning.

Yashpal builds the entire story on a stark contrast that lays bare the injustice of a class-divided society. On one side stands a poor old farmer whose only son has died of a snakebite; the family is left with a fevered widowed daughter-in-law, hungry grandchildren, debts and the cost of the thirteenth-day rites. Crushed by such poverty, the grief-stricken father cannot even afford to sit at home and mourn — he is forced to drag himself to the market and sell the very melons his dead son had plucked. The unfeeling crowd, seeing only the surface, condemns him as shameless and greedy. On the other side, the narrator recalls a rich neighbour whose daughter-in-law's death allowed the family to mourn in luxury: doctors attended the lady, perfumes and rosewater were sprinkled on her bed, and the whole town respectfully spoke of her grief. The contrast makes the bitter truth unmistakable — the rich possess the 'right to grieve', the leisure and dignity of mourning, while the poor are denied even this most basic human right because survival comes first. Through this contrast Yashpal indicts a society in which money decides who may weep and who may not, and appeals to the reader's conscience to look beyond appearances and feel true compassion for the suffering poor.

The story conveys the powerful message that we should never judge a person by outward appearances or before understanding their circumstances, and it awakens the reader's compassion towards the poor. It exposes how, in an unjust society, even grief becomes a privilege of the wealthy. The narrator's attitude is sharply different from that of the indifferent crowd. The people in the market see the old man selling melons while sobbing and instantly brand him as shameless, greedy and low-caste, never caring to learn the truth. The narrator, in contrast, is sensitive and thoughtful; he is disturbed by the sight and takes the trouble to enquire about the old man's real situation. When he discovers the tragedy behind the scene — the son's death, the starving family, the burden of customs — he is moved to deep reflection on social injustice. While the crowd represents thoughtless cruelty and prejudice, the narrator represents the humane, enquiring conscience that the story urges every reader to develop. The story thus teaches that true humanity lies in empathy and understanding, not in hasty condemnation.

According to the narrator, a person's dress reveals a good deal about him — his social status, class and condition — but it cannot reveal the real depth of his inner sorrow.

This reflective opening prepares the ground for the whole story. It explains why the crowd, judging only by appearances, condemns the old man, while the narrator, by descending to the level of the old man's life and learning his circumstances, alone understands his true grief.
