Overview

About the author: Sant Raidas (also called Ravidas) was a great saint-poet of the Nirguna branch of the Bhakti movement, born in the late 15th century (around 1450) in Banaras (Kashi). He belonged to a family of cobblers (chamar caste) and earned his living by making and mending shoes, yet he became one of the most revered devotees of his age. He was a disciple of Swami Ramananda and a contemporary of Kabir; Meera Bai is traditionally regarded as his disciple. Raidas worshipped a formless (nirguna) God and used the simple language of the common people — Sadhukkari, a mixed dialect of Brajbhasha. Through his devotional pads (verses) he spread the message of pure devotion, equality of all human beings and the rejection of caste and social distinctions. His compositions are also included in the Guru Granth Sahib.
📖 Stanza-wise Explanation
Now how can the constant repetition of Rama's name, which has gripped me, ever leave me? O Lord, you are sandalwood and I am water; your fragrance has spread into every limb (every drop) of me. O Lord, you are the dense rain-cloud in the forest and I am the peacock, who gazes at you the way the chakor bird gazes at the moon. O Lord, you are the lamp and I am the wick, whose light burns day and night. O Lord, you are the pearl and I am the thread (on which it is strung), our union as natural as gold meeting borax (suhaga) to gain its shine. O Lord, you are the master and I am the servant — such is the devotion that Raidas performs.

O my beloved Lord, who else but you can do such (kindness)? My Lord, the protector of the poor, has placed the canopy of royalty upon my head. The one whose very touch the whole world shuns — even upon him you pour your grace. My Govind raises the lowly to a high station and fears no one. Through your grace Namdev, Kabir, Trilochan, Sadhana and Sain crossed the ocean of existence. Says Ravidas: Listen, O saints, the gracious Lord (Hari) can accomplish everything.

📝 Summary
In these two pads, Sant Raidas expresses his complete and unwavering devotion to God. In the first pad he says that the habit of constantly chanting Rama's name has so taken hold of him that it can never leave. To describe the deep, inseparable bond between the devotee and the Lord, he uses a chain of beautiful comparisons: God is sandalwood and he is water, God is the rain-cloud and he is the peacock, God is the lamp and he is the wick, God is the pearl and he is the thread, God is the master and he is the servant. In every image the devotee surrenders himself completely and finds his existence only through union with God. In the second pad he praises God as the merciful uplifter of the poor and the lowly. God places a royal canopy on the head of the humble, shows grace even to those whom society treats as untouchable, raises the low to a high station and fears no one. Raidas reminds the saints that it is through this grace that great devotees like Namdev, Kabir, Trilochan, Sadhana and Sain attained salvation, for the Lord is capable of doing everything.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea of Raidas's pads is pure, selfless and unconditional devotion (bhakti) to a formless God, expressed through the inseparable bond between the servant-devotee and the master-Lord. The poet also conveys that God is the merciful protector of the poor and the downtrodden, who removes all distinctions of high and low and grants salvation to true devotees regardless of caste or birth.

🧭 Message & Title
The poet's message is that true devotion to God does not depend on caste, birth or social status — only on a pure and loving heart. We should surrender ourselves completely to God, who is merciful and treats all human beings as equal. The walls of high and low created by society are meaningless before God, who lifts up even the humblest and the most despised.

The title 'Raidas ke Pad' (The Verses of Raidas) is wholly appropriate because the lesson is a collection of devotional 'pad's (short lyrical verses meant to be sung) composed by the saint-poet Raidas. As is the convention with Bhakti poets, Raidas signs his verses with his own name ('Raidasa', 'Ravidas') in the final line (chhaap/bhanita), confirming his authorship. The title simply and accurately names the poet and the form, while the content faithfully expresses his characteristic themes of devotion, surrender and equality. Hence the title is fully justified.

He calls God 'gareeb-nivaaj' (kind to the poor) because God shows compassion to the poor and the downtrodden, places a royal canopy on the head of the humble, and lifts the low to a high station. It shows God's mercy, kindness and impartial love for all, regardless of caste or status.

Raidas names Namdev, Kabir, Trilochan, Sadhana and Sain. He names them to show that these devotees, though of ordinary or low social standing, attained salvation purely through God's grace and their devotion — proving that the merciful Lord can do everything and saves all true devotees.

God is sandalwood and the devotee is water. Just as sandalwood's fragrance dissolves into water and spreads into its every drop, so the love and presence of God has merged into every part of the devotee's being. It expresses the complete, inseparable mingling of the devotee with God.

Sant Raidas himself belonged to a community considered 'low' by the society of his time, yet he became a revered saint through his devotion. In the second pad this lived experience flowers into a powerful message of equality. He calls God 'gareeb-nivaaj' — the one who is gracious to the poor — and says that the Lord has placed the royal canopy on the head of a humble devotee like him, raising him to kingly honour. He boldly states that the one whose very touch the world shuns ('jaaki chhoti jagat kau laagai') receives God's grace, and that God 'raises the lowly to a high station' and 'fears no one'. Through this, Raidas declares that before God there is no high or low; caste and social rank created by human beings are meaningless. The naming of saints like Namdev, Kabir, Trilochan, Sadhana and Sain — many of humble origins — proves that salvation depends not on birth but on true devotion. Thus the pad rejects untouchability and casteism and upholds the dignity and equality of every human being in the eyes of a compassionate God.

In the first pad Raidas builds a chain of vivid images to show that his devotion is total, constant and inseparable. He begins by saying that the habit of chanting Rama's name can never leave him. Then he places God and himself in five paired images, always keeping himself in the dependent, lower position: God is sandalwood and he is the water carrying its fragrance into every drop; God is the rain-cloud and he is the peacock that dances with joy at the sight of it, like the chakor that gazes endlessly at the moon; God is the lamp and he is the wick whose flame burns day and night; God is the pearl and he is the thread that holds it, their union as natural as gold gaining lustre from borax; finally God is the master and he is the servant. Each image deepens the sense of loving surrender — the devotee has no separate existence apart from the Lord. The repeated structure 'Prabhu ji, tum... ham...' gives the verse a song-like, prayerful rhythm and stresses the constancy of his devotion. Through these everyday, sensory images drawn from common life, Raidas makes the abstract experience of bhakti vivid, intimate and unforgettable.

God is compared to the lamp and the devotee to the wick.
