About the author: The author skillfully uses wit and satire to depict human nature and societal attitudes through the tale of a man and his mustachios.
📖 Detailed Explanation
The story opens with the narrator observing that there are many kinds of moustaches worn in India to distinguish one class of people from another, and that, curiously, the moustache has become a more potent symbol of a man's caste and rank than the turban. He explains the various recognisable types: the tiger moustache, the goat moustache, the Charlie Chaplin moustache, the lion moustache, and so on, each suggesting a particular temperament or social standing. This humorous catalogue sets up the central idea that something as trivial as facial hair can carry exaggerated social meaning.

The two main characters are introduced: Seth Azam Khan, a money-lender, and Khan Azam Khan, a poor descendant of an old, once-noble Afghan landowning family. Although Khan Azam Khan is now penniless, he proudly wears the upturned 'tiger moustache' (also called the lion or royal moustache), the sign of aristocratic, ruling-class lineage. Seth, the prosperous shopkeeper and pawnbroker, belongs to the trading class and wears the 'goat moustache' that turns downward. The contrast is sharply ironic: the man with money belongs to the lower social rank, while the man of noble blood is reduced to poverty and must pawn his belongings.

Khan Azam Khan comes to Seth's shop to pawn an old, useless pair of scissors so that he can buy food for his family. While the transaction is taking place, Khan happens to notice that the ends of Seth's goat moustache are curling slightly upward, in a manner that imitates the royal tiger moustache reserved for men of noble birth. Outraged that a mere money-lender of the trading caste should dare to wear his moustache like an aristocrat, Khan loftily orders Seth to turn the ends of his moustache down. This trivial demand triggers the whole comic conflict.

Seth at first calmly refuses, pointing out that the way a man wears his own moustache is his personal affair. The argument escalates. To pacify the increasingly furious Khan, Seth offers a clever bargain: he will turn his moustache down if Khan pawns yet another article. Khan, blinded by aristocratic pride, agrees. He pawns a metal pot for a rupee and a few annas, and Seth obligingly twists his moustache downward. But as soon as Khan leaves, Seth, equally proud and unwilling to be dictated to, turns the ends of his moustache up again.

The cycle repeats and intensifies. Each time Khan returns and again finds Seth's moustache turned up, his rage grows, and each time Seth uses the quarrel to extract a fresh pledge. One by one, to satisfy his absurd point of honour, Khan pawns everything he owns: a brass platter, a silver wristlet, then his wife's nose-ring and silver bangles, then even the gold thread and silken garments. His blind obsession with the 'honour' of the tiger moustache reduces him and his family to total destitution, while Seth grows steadily richer from the pledges.

Finally Khan is left with nothing more to pawn, yet Seth's moustache is once again turned defiantly upward. Defeated and desperate, and unwilling to surrender his pride, Khan makes a last, ruinous gesture: he 'buys' Seth's moustache itself. He hands over the last bit of money he can raise and demands that Seth, in exchange, turn his moustache down for good and accept that the royal tiger moustache now belongs to Khan alone. The story ends with this final, ridiculous bargain, in which Khan has impoverished himself completely to preserve nothing but the empty symbol of his lost aristocratic dignity.

📝 Summary
'A Pair of Mustachios' by Mulk Raj Anand is a satirical tale about how trivial symbols of class and pride can ruin a man. The narrator first explains how, in India, the style of one's moustache signals caste and rank. The story then centres on two men: Khan Azam Khan, an impoverished descendant of a noble Afghan family who proudly wears the upturned 'tiger' (royal) moustache, and Seth Azam Khan, a wealthy money-lender of the trading caste who wears the downturned 'goat' moustache. When Khan visits Seth's shop to pawn goods for food, he is enraged to see Seth's moustache-ends curling upward in imitation of the aristocratic style. He demands Seth turn them down. Seth craftily agrees only in exchange for fresh pledges, then secretly turns his moustache up again each time Khan leaves. Trapped by his absurd sense of honour, Khan pawns away all his possessions and even his wife's jewellery, while Seth grows richer. In the end, with nothing left, Khan ruins himself completely by 'buying' the right to Seth's moustache, sacrificing everything for an empty symbol of dignity. The story is a gentle but pointed comedy on false pride, class snobbery and the irrationality of social vanity.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea is that false pride and obsession with empty symbols of social status are self-destructive and irrational. Khan Azam Khan literally beggars himself and his family to defend the 'honour' of a moustache, showing how human vanity can override common sense, while the shrewd Seth exploits this folly for profit.

🧭 Message & Title
The story teaches that clinging to hollow symbols of status and yielding to false pride leads only to self-ruin. True dignity lies in practical wisdom and self-respect, not in outward signs of rank. One must value substance over show and never let vanity override reason and the welfare of one's family.

The title 'A Pair of Mustachios' is apt and ironic because the entire conflict, and Khan Azam Khan's total ruin, revolve around nothing more than a pair of moustaches and the direction their ends are twisted. By naming the story after such a trivial object, Anand underlines his satirical point: that men can attach enormous, even fatal, importance to the most petty symbols of pride and class. The 'pair' also subtly contrasts the two men and their two rival moustaches, making the title central to both the plot and the theme.

Khan Azam Khan is the impoverished descendant of an old, once-noble Afghan landowning family. Though he now has almost nothing, he is fiercely proud of his aristocratic lineage, symbolised by his upturned 'tiger' moustache. He is hot-tempered, impractical and obsessed with class honour to the point of foolishness. His blind insistence that a money-lender must not wear his moustache in the royal style leads him to pawn away all his possessions and his wife's jewellery, and finally to ruin himself completely. He is a tragicomic figure—pitiable in his poverty yet ridiculous in his vanity—through whom Anand exposes the destructiveness of false pride.

Mulk Raj Anand's story is a sharp satire on the rigid class consciousness and irrational pride that govern social life. Anand begins by showing how, absurdly, even the style of a man's moustache becomes a marker of caste and rank. This trivial symbol becomes the engine of the plot. Khan Azam Khan, a descendant of a noble Afghan family, is now utterly poor, yet clings to the upturned 'tiger' moustache as proof of his lost nobility. Seth Azam Khan, a wealthy money-lender of the trading caste, wears the downturned 'goat' moustache but lets its ends curl upward. The irony is biting: the man with real money and power is socially 'low', while the man of noble blood must pawn his goods for food. Blinded by class pride, Khan cannot tolerate a tradesman wearing the royal moustache and demands he turn it down. The cunning Seth exploits this folly, extracting pledge after pledge until Khan has pawned everything—his property, even his wife's jewellery—and finally ruins himself by 'buying' the moustache itself. Through the proud, impractical Khan and the shrewd, calculating Seth, Anand exposes how empty symbols of status and false pride can destroy a man, while the satire also marks the decline of the old aristocracy before the rising power of money.

Khan Azam Khan's ruin is gradual but relentless, brought about entirely by his own pride. He first comes to Seth's shop merely to pawn an old pair of scissors for food, already a poor man. There he is enraged to see Seth's moustache turned up like the royal tiger moustache and demands it be turned down. Seth agrees only in exchange for fresh pledges, then secretly turns his moustache up again the moment Khan leaves. Each renewed quarrel costs Khan another possession: a brass platter, a silver wristlet, his wife's nose-ring and bangles, and finally even gold and silken garments. Step by step, his absurd point of honour empties his home, while Seth grows steadily richer. At last, with nothing left to pawn and Seth's moustache still defiantly upturned, the desperate Khan ruins himself completely by 'buying' the moustache itself, surrendering his last resources to preserve a hollow symbol. His fate teaches us that false pride and obsession with empty marks of status are utterly self-destructive; that true dignity lies in good sense and the welfare of one's family, not in outward show; and that vanity, when allowed to override reason, leads only to disaster.
