The Third And Final Continent

Class 11 · English (Woven Words) · Woven_Words

✍️ About the Author / Poet

Jhumpa Lahiri (born 1967) is an acclaimed Indian-American author of Bengali origin, born in London and raised in Rhode Island, USA. She rose to international fame with her debut short-story collection 'Interpreter of Maladies' (1999), which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2000. 'The Third and Final Continent' is the closing story of that very collection. Much of Lahiri's writing explores the immigrant experience, the tension between Indian roots and American life, questions of identity, marriage, dislocation and belonging. Her style is quiet, precise and emotionally restrained, allowing small everyday details to carry deep meaning. Her other notable works include the novels 'The Namesake' (2003) and 'The Lowland' (2013), and the collection 'Unaccustomed Earth'. In recent years she has also written in Italian. Much of this story is inspired by the experiences of her own father, an immigrant who, like the narrator, came to the United States in the 1960s.

📖 Detailed Explanation

The story is narrated in the first person by an unnamed young man from Calcutta (Kolkata). He recalls leaving India in 1964 with a certificate in commerce and the equivalent of about ten dollars. He sailed for three weeks on the SS Roma to England, living first in a crowded house in north London shared by other penniless Bengali bachelors. They lived frugally, eating egg curry, sleeping on the floor, and reading the works of others while waiting to build their lives. Eventually he completed his education and took a job in the processing department of a library at MIT in America, marking the beginning of his life on his 'third continent'.

On the advice of a Bengali acquaintage, he goes to a YMCA in Boston but finds it noisy and uncomfortable. Reading the newspaper, he answers an advertisement for a room and arrives at the home of Mrs. Croft, a remarkably old woman—a hundred and three years old—who lives alone. She is extremely formal and rigid in her habits. Sitting bolt upright at her piano bench, she repeatedly declares with great excitement that an American flag has been planted on the moon, calling it 'a splendid thing', and demands that the narrator respond by saying 'Splendid!' He humours her, gradually realising how lonely and proud this fiercely independent woman is.

The narrator rents the room for eight dollars a week. Mrs. Croft lays down strict rules: he must lock the door and deposit the rent money in the brim of a particular bench. Her daughter Helen, herself a woman of about sixty-eight, visits once a week with groceries. Helen tells the narrator that her mother was born in 1866, gave piano lessons for decades, and is fiercely proud—she will not accept charity or even allow a telephone or a 'lady visitor' in the house improperly. The narrator is touched by Mrs. Croft's vulnerability; one night he worries when he finds her fallen, and feels a growing tenderness and duty towards her, almost like that of a son.

Meanwhile, the narrator's marriage has been arranged back in India. His wife, Mala, arrives in America some weeks later. The marriage was between strangers; the narrator feels no immediate love, only a sense of duty and slight awkwardness as they begin life together in a rented apartment. Mala, shy and dutiful, wears the sari and vermilion of a married woman and tries hard to adjust to the strange new country, often homesick and quiet.

A turning point comes when the narrator takes Mala to meet Mrs. Croft. The old lady inspects Mala with her piercing formality, then, after a pause, pronounces her 'a perfect lady'. This simple verdict melts the awkwardness between husband and wife; for the first time they share a genuine smile and a sense of closeness. Mrs. Croft, by accepting Mala, unknowingly binds the couple together. Soon afterwards the narrator reads in the newspaper of Mrs. Croft's death and is unexpectedly moved to grief—the first death in America that truly saddens him.

The story closes many years later. The narrator and Mala have built a settled, loving life in America; they have become citizens, own a home, and have a son who is grown up and attends Harvard. Their early shyness has long since blossomed into deep companionship and love. The narrator reflects with wonder on his extraordinary journey across three continents. He concludes that while astronauts who walked on the moon are celebrated as heroes, his own quieter achievement—of leaving everything familiar, crossing oceans, and making a life in a strange land—seems to him equally remarkable. He hopes his son will remember and value this ordinary yet extraordinary story of endurance and belonging.

📝 Summary

Narrated by an unnamed Bengali immigrant, the story traces his journey across three continents—Asia (India), Europe (England) and America. In 1964 he leaves Calcutta for London with very little money, then takes a library job at MIT in Boston. There he rents a room from Mrs. Croft, a fiercely independent hundred-and-three-year-old widow obsessed with the news that an American flag has been planted on the moon. Through small daily exchanges, the narrator develops a tender, almost filial bond with the lonely old woman. Meanwhile his arranged marriage brings his wife Mala from India; the two are awkward strangers until Mrs. Croft, meeting Mala, declares her 'a perfect lady', a moment that gently unites the couple. After Mrs. Croft's death, the narrator and Mala build a loving, settled life in America, raising a son who attends Harvard. Looking back, the narrator marvels that his own quiet act of crossing continents and making a home in a strange land is, in its way, as remarkable as the astronauts' walk on the moon.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

Life's greatest victories are often quiet and ordinary. Leaving home, enduring loneliness, building love and belonging in a strange land require courage no less than walking on the moon. Kindness and human connection—even between strangers separated by age and culture—give life its true meaning, and such journeys of endurance deserve to be remembered and honoured.

Justification of the Title

The title 'The Third and Final Continent' refers to the narrator's life journey across three continents—Asia (his birthplace India), Europe (England, where he studied and worked) and finally America (his 'third' continent). America is 'final' because it becomes his permanent home, where he marries, raises a son and grows old. The title is apt because it captures the immigrant's progression from rootlessness to settlement, and the sense of arrival and belonging that the whole story builds towards. It also quietly elevates this personal odyssey to the scale of an epic, geographical adventure, echoing the era's spirit of crossing new frontiers.

🪄 Literary Devices

First-person reflective narration — “The entire story is told by the unnamed narrator looking back: 'I know that my achievement is quite ordinary...'”

The whole tale is recounted by the protagonist in a calm, reflective first-person voice, giving the story intimacy, authenticity and an autobiographical, memoir-like quality.

Symbolism — “The 1969 moon landing and the American flag on the moon; the three continents.”

Irony — “Mrs. Croft, born in 1866, is thrilled by the 1969 moon landing; the astronauts are called heroes while the narrator's own journey goes unsung.”

There is gentle irony in a woman who has outlived an entire century being most excited by the newest scientific marvel, and in the contrast between publicly celebrated 'heroes' and the unnoticed heroism of an ordinary immigrant.

Imagery — “Egg curry eaten off newspapers in London; Mrs. Croft sitting bolt upright on the piano bench; Mala's sari and vermilion.”

Contrast (Juxtaposition) — “Old age vs youth (Mrs. Croft and the narrator), tradition vs modernity, the familiar India vs the strange America.”

Lahiri's deliberately restrained, understated style lets deep emotions surface through small details rather than dramatic declarations, intensifying their effect on the reader.

An immigrant who crosses three continents with little money but great determination, he is dutiful in his arranged marriage and respectful, even tender, towards the difficult Mrs. Croft. Though physically frail, she refuses charity and lives strictly by her own rules. Her excitement over the moon landing and her insistence on propriety reveal both a sharp mind and deep loneliness. His third continent is America, where he takes a library job at MIT and rents a room from the eccentric, fiercely independent Mrs. Croft. At each stage he learns endurance, adaptation and self-reliance. In America his arranged marriage to Mala, at first awkward, slowly deepens into genuine love, especially after Mrs. Croft's approval of Mala. The old woman's loneliness and dignity teach him compassion, and her death moves him deeply. Over the years he becomes a citizen, owns a home and raises a son who studies at Harvard. The journey transforms a poor, lonely young immigrant into a settled, loving family man who has built belonging out of strangeness. Reflecting at the end, he realises that his quiet act of crossing continents and making a home is, in its own way, as remarkable as the astronauts walking on the moon—thus the journey gives him not just a new country but a new sense of identity, dignity and purpose.

Q. Discuss the relationship between the narrator and Mrs. Croft, and its significance in the story.

The relationship between the young Indian narrator and the hundred-and-three-year-old American landlady is the emotional heart of the story. At first it is purely practical—he rents a cheap room and follows her rigid rules. Through their nightly ritual of agreeing that the moon landing is 'splendid', a strange tenderness grows. The narrator, far from his own family, comes to care for the lonely, proud old woman almost as a son would; he worries for her safety and respects her fierce independence and dignity. Their bond bridges enormous gaps of age, race, nationality and culture, embodying the story's theme that human connection can transcend all barriers. Mrs. Croft's significance peaks when she meets Mala and pronounces her 'a perfect lady'—a moment that thaws the new couple's awkwardness and unites them. Her later death is the first in America to truly grieve the narrator, showing how deeply she had touched his life. Through her, Lahiri also redefines heroism: this frail, dignified woman who refuses charity is, in her own quiet way, as remarkable as any celebrated hero, mirroring the narrator's own understated courage.

Reference to Context (Extract-based)
While the astronauts, heroes forever, spent mere hours on the moon, I have remained in this new world for nearly thirty years. I know that my achievement is quite ordinary. I am not the only man to seek his fortune far from home, and certainly I am not the first. Still, there are times I am bewildered by each mile I have travelled, each meal I have eaten, each person I have known, each room in which I have slept.
Q. Who are the 'heroes forever' and how does the narrator compare himself to them?

The 'heroes forever' are the astronauts who landed on the moon in 1969. The narrator notes that while they spent only a few hours there, he has survived in a strange new world for almost thirty years—suggesting his own long endurance is quietly heroic too.

Q. Why does the narrator call his achievement 'quite ordinary'?
