📖 Stanza-wise Explanation
Some are living in mansions, some are living in holes:
Yet there's no place for us, my dear, yet there's no place for us.
The speaker, a Jewish refugee, tells his beloved that the city is enormous, housing ten million people. Some of them live in grand mansions while others survive in wretched, hole-like dwellings. Yet, despite this vastness and variety of living spaces, there is no room at all for the refugees. The repeated phrase stresses their complete homelessness and rejection.

Look in the atlas and you'll find it there:
We cannot go there now, my dear, we cannot go there now.
The refugees once had a homeland of their own which they considered beautiful and just. That country still exists and can be located in any atlas. However, they can no longer return to it, for they have been driven out by persecution. The country exists on paper but is forever lost to them in reality.

Every spring it blossoms anew:
Old passports can't do that, my dear, old passports can't do that.
In the village churchyard stands an old yew tree which renews itself by blossoming every spring. In contrast, the refugees' old passports cannot be renewed; once expired or revoked, they are useless. Nature is given the gift of constant renewal, but the stateless refugees are denied even the basic right of legal identity.

"If you've got no passport you're officially dead":
But we are still alive, my dear, but we are still alive.
When the refugees approached the consul (an official) for help, he angrily struck the table and declared that without a passport a person is officially counted as dead. This bureaucratic cruelty reduces living human beings to non-existence on paper. Yet the speaker bitterly reminds his beloved that, regardless of documents, they are still very much alive.

Asked me politely to return next year:
But where shall we go to-day, my dear, but where shall we go to-day?
The speaker then approached a committee for assistance. They were superficially courteous, offering him a chair to sit and politely asking him to come back the following year. This empty politeness offers no real help. The desperate refugee, however, has no shelter even for the present day and cannot wait for a distant future.

"If we let them in, they will steal our daily bread":
He was talking of you and me, my dear, he was talking of you and me.
At a public meeting, an orator rose and declared that if the refugees were allowed entry, they would steal the livelihood and food of the local citizens. The refugees are thus portrayed as a threat and a burden. With pain, the speaker realises that this hostile speaker was referring to harmless people like him and his beloved.

It was Hitler over Europe, saying, "They must die":
O we were in his mind, my dear, O we were in his mind.
The speaker imagined he heard thunder rolling in the sky, but it was actually the menacing voice of Hitler spreading across Europe, decreeing that the Jews must die. The thunder symbolises the looming threat of Nazi violence. The refugees realise with horror that they were specifically in Hitler's destructive thoughts, marked out for death.

Saw a door opened and a cat let in:
But they weren't German Jews, my dear, but they weren't German Jews.
The speaker observed how even animals were treated kindly: a pet poodle was dressed warmly in a jacket fastened with a pin, and a door was opened to let a cat inside. The bitter irony is that these animals received care and shelter denied to the refugees, simply because the animals were not German Jews. Human beings were valued less than pets.

Saw the fish swimming as if they were free:
Only ten feet away, my dear, only ten feet away.
The speaker walked to the harbour and stood on the quay, watching fish swim freely in the water just ten feet away. The freedom of the fish stands in sharp contrast to the imprisonment and helplessness of the refugees. Even simple creatures enjoy a liberty that is cruelly denied to persecuted human beings.

They had no politicians and sang at their ease:
They weren't the human race, my dear, they weren't the human race.
Walking through a wood, the speaker saw birds sitting in the trees, singing happily and without worry. The birds had no politicians to divide them by race or nationality, so they lived in perfect ease. They were free precisely because they did not belong to the human race, which had created cruel barriers of hatred and exclusion.

A thousand windows and a thousand doors;
Not one of them was ours, my dear, not one of them was ours.
In a dream the speaker saw an enormous building with a thousand floors, a thousand windows and a thousand doors. Ten thousand soldiers marched to and fro:
Looking for you and me, my dear, looking for you and me.
The speaker stood on a vast open plain as snow fell, watching ten thousand soldiers marching back and forth. These soldiers were searching for the refugees in order to capture or kill them. 📝 Summary
'Refugee Blues' by W.H. Auden is a moving lament voicing the agony of Jewish refugees who fled Nazi persecution in the late 1930s. Spoken by one refugee to his beloved, the poem moves through a series of bitter contrasts. Though the city holds ten million people in mansions and hovels, there is no place for the refugees. They once had a homeland, now lost to them forever, while old passports cannot be renewed like a blossoming yew tree. A consul declares them officially dead without papers; a committee offers empty courtesy and a vague future date; a public speaker accuses them of stealing the citizens' bread; and Hitler's voice thunders over Europe condemning them to death. The speaker notes the cruel irony that pet poodles, cats, free-swimming fish and singing birds enjoy care and liberty denied to human refugees, simply because they are not German Jews and do not belong to the politically divided human race. The poem ends with the nightmare of a thousand-floored building where no door is theirs, and ten thousand soldiers marching across a snowy plain in search of the hunted couple. Written in the blues form with its sorrowful refrains, the poem powerfully captures statelessness, despair and the failure of humanity.

The title 'Refugee Blues' is highly appropriate. 'Refugee' identifies the subject of the poem — the homeless, persecuted people forced to flee their land. 'Blues' refers to a form of African-American music traditionally associated with sorrow, suffering and lament. By combining the two, Auden signals both the theme (the misery of refugees) and the musical, mournful form of the poem, with its melancholy refrains and repeated lines echoing the rhythm of blues songs. The title thus perfectly fuses content and form to express deep grief.

In 'Refugee Blues', W.H. Auden gives a heart-rending account of the suffering and helplessness of Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution. The poem opens with the bitter truth that, though the city houses ten million people in mansions and hovels, there is no place at all for the refugees. They once had a beautiful homeland, still visible in the atlas, but can never return. Their plight is deepened by bureaucratic cruelty: a consul declares them 'officially dead' without passports, and a committee offers empty courtesy and a vague future date instead of real aid. At a public meeting they are accused of stealing the citizens' bread, and Hitler's thunderous voice over Europe condemns them to death. Auden sharpens the pathos through a series of contrasts — pampered pets, free-swimming fish and carefree birds all enjoy warmth, liberty and care denied to the refugees, simply because they are not German Jews. The poem closes with nightmarish images of a thousand-doored building where no door is theirs and ten thousand soldiers hunting them across a snowy plain. Through the mournful blues form, its haunting refrains and bitter irony, the poem powerfully conveys the statelessness, despair and utter helplessness of refugees, while indicting a world too prejudiced and indifferent to offer them shelter.

Contrast and irony are the two most powerful devices in 'Refugee Blues', and Auden uses them masterfully to intensify the reader's sympathy for the refugees. The poem is structured upon a sequence of sharp contrasts: a city of ten million has people in mansions and holes, yet no place for the refugees; a blossoming yew renews itself while their passports cannot; free fish and singing birds enjoy a liberty the refugees lack; and a dream-building of a thousand doors holds not one for them. The most striking irony lies in the treatment of animals — a poodle is dressed in a warm jacket and a cat is let in through an open door, yet these comforts are denied to human beings, simply because the animals are 'not German Jews'. Similarly, it is bitterly ironic that the birds are free precisely because 'they weren't the human race', implying that humanity, with its politicians and prejudices, has made itself the cruellest and least free of creatures. The consul's declaration that the living refugees are 'officially dead' is a savage irony of bureaucracy. These contrasts and ironies expose the absurdity and injustice of the refugees' situation, deepen the poem's pathos, and turn it into a stinging indictment of human indifference and prejudice.

The second line contrasts 'mansions' with 'holes', showing the gulf between the rich and the poor in the city, yet stressing that neither extreme has any room for the homeless refugees.

The third line uses a refrain (repetition) — 'yet there's no place for us' is repeated. Typical of the blues form, it emphasises the refugees' utter homelessness and creates a mournful, lamenting tone.
