✍️ About the Author / Poet

Dilip Purushottam Chitre (1938-2009) was one of the foremost Indian writers, poets and critics to emerge in the post-Independence era. Born in Baroda and later settling in Mumbai, he wrote with equal mastery in both Marathi and English, becoming a major bilingual voice in modern Indian literature. He was also a painter and a filmmaker. His best-known work is the translation of the medieval Marathi saint-poet Tukaram into English ('Says Tuka'). His poetry, often rooted in urban and personal landscapes, examines memory, displacement, modernity and the tension between rootedness and change. 'Felling of the Banyan Tree' draws on his own childhood memory of his family's house in Baroda being demolished, where his grandmother's banyan tree was cut down.

📖 Stanza-wise Explanation

My father told the tenants to leave
Who lived in the houses surrounding our house on the hill
One by one the structures were demolished
Only our own house remained and the trees
Trees are sacred my grandmother used to say
Felling them is a crime but he massacred them all
The sheoga, the oudumber, the neem were all cut down
But the huge banyan tree stood like a problem

The poet recalls how his father ordered the tenants who lived in the houses surrounding their hilltop home to leave. The surrounding structures were pulled down one after another, until only their own house and the trees were left standing. The poet's grandmother held the traditional belief that trees are sacred and that cutting them is a sin. Yet the father, ignoring this, destroyed them all. The sheoga, the oudumber and the neem trees were chopped down. Only the enormous banyan tree continued to stand, resisting like an unsolved problem that defied easy removal.

Whose roots lay deeper than our lives
My father ordered it to be removed
The banyan tree was three times as tall as our house
Its trunk had a circumference of fifty feet
Its scraggy aerial roots fell to the ground
From thirty feet or more so first they cut the branches
Sawing them off for seven days and the heap was huge
Insects and birds began to leave the tree

The banyan tree's roots ran deeper than the lives of the family members, suggesting how ancient it was and how rooted it was in time and memory. Still, the father ordered its removal. The poet describes its sheer enormity: it was three times taller than their house and its trunk had a circumference of fifty feet. Its rough, hanging aerial roots dropped to the ground from a height of thirty feet or more. To bring it down, the workers first cut off its branches, sawing them for seven long days, creating a huge heap of wood. As the tree was being dismembered, the insects and birds that sheltered in it began to abandon it.

The mutilated old banyan tree stood like a defeated soldier
And the great soul descended from it as it fell

Once stripped of its branches, the maimed, age-old banyan tree stood bare and ruined, resembling a soldier who had been overcome and beaten in battle. As the mighty tree finally crashed down, the poet imagines that its 'great soul' departed from it — likening the tree to a living, almost divine being whose spirit left its body at the moment of death.

Soon afterwards we left Baroda for Bombay
Where there are no trees except the one
Which grows and seethes in one's dreams, its aerial roots
Looking for the ground to strike

Shortly after the banyan tree was destroyed, the family moved away from Baroda to the great city of Bombay (Mumbai). In Bombay, a crowded urban space, there are no real trees. The only tree that survives is the one that grows and stirs restlessly in the poet's dreams and memory — the lost banyan tree. Even in the subconscious, its aerial roots keep reaching out, searching for ground in which to take hold. This reveals how deeply the loss of the tree, and of the natural, rooted past, haunts the poet in the rootless modern city.

📝 Summary

'Felling of the Banyan Tree' by Dilip Chitre is an autobiographical poem in free verse that recounts a painful childhood memory. The poet's father, a man of modern, practical outlook, orders the tenants around their hilltop house in Baroda to leave and has the surrounding houses demolished one by one. Ignoring the grandmother's traditional belief that trees are sacred and that felling them is a crime, the father has all the trees — the sheoga, oudumber and neem — cut down. The giant banyan tree, three times taller than the house with a trunk fifty feet around and aerial roots falling from a great height, resists the longest, standing 'like a problem'. It takes the workers seven days merely to saw off its branches, during which insects and birds flee. The mutilated tree finally stands like a defeated soldier, and as it falls, its 'great soul' seems to leave it. Soon after, the family migrates to Bombay, a city without trees, where the banyan survives only in the poet's dreams, its aerial roots still seeking ground. The poem mourns the destruction of nature, heritage and rootedness in the name of modernity and progress.

💡 Central Idea

The central idea of the poem is the conflict between ruthless modernity and the sanctity of nature and tradition. Through the violent felling of an ancient, almost sacred banyan tree, Chitre laments how human greed and the urge for 'progress' destroy not only the natural environment but also our cultural roots, memories and sense of belonging. The tree's survival only in the poet's dreams shows that what is destroyed in the outer world lives on as loss and longing within.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

The poet's message is that nature is sacred and alive, and that destroying trees in the name of progress is a kind of murder that impoverishes both the earth and the human soul. We must respect and preserve our trees, environment and cultural roots, for once destroyed they cannot be replaced — they survive only as painful memory. True progress should not come at the cost of our heritage and our bond with the natural world.

Justification of the Title

The title 'Felling of the Banyan Tree' is apt and direct, as the entire poem centres on the single, decisive event of cutting down the great banyan. The banyan, being India's most revered and long-lived tree, immediately suggests something ancient, sacred and life-giving. The word 'felling' carries a sense of violence and finality, hinting that this is not ordinary tree-cutting but the destruction of a living heritage. The title thus prepares the reader for the poem's deeper concerns — the loss of nature, tradition, rootedness and memory — making it both literal and richly symbolic.

Short Answer Questions
Q. Why did the grandmother consider the felling of trees a crime?

The grandmother held the traditional belief that trees are sacred. To her, trees were holy living beings connected to faith and nature, so cutting them down was a sin and a crime against both religion and life.

Q. Why does the poet say the banyan tree 'stood like a problem'?

The banyan was enormous — three times taller than the house, with a trunk fifty feet round and roots dropping from thirty feet. Its sheer size made it extremely difficult to cut down, so it stood as an obstacle or 'problem' resisting the father's plan, unlike the smaller trees.

Q. How does the poet describe the tree as a living being at the moment it falls?

The poet says the mutilated tree stood 'like a defeated soldier' and that 'the great soul descended from it as it fell.' By giving the tree a soul that departs at death, he portrays its cutting as the death of a noble, sentient being rather than mere wood.

Q. What is the significance of the family moving to Bombay at the end of the poem?

Bombay is shown as a city 'where there are no trees', representing rootless, treeless modern urban life. The move contrasts the green, rooted past of Baroda with the barren present, and the banyan now grows only in the poet's dreams, showing that the loss has become a permanent inner wound.

Long Answer Questions
Q. Discuss 'Felling of the Banyan Tree' as a poem about the conflict between tradition and modernity, and the destruction of nature.

Dilip Chitre's poem dramatises the painful clash between old, reverent values and ruthless modern practicality. Tradition is embodied by the grandmother, who believes that 'trees are sacred' and that 'felling them is a crime' — a worldview rooted in faith, gratitude and harmony with nature. Modernity is embodied by the father, who, with cold efficiency, evicts tenants, demolishes houses and 'massacres' the sheoga, oudumber and neem without remorse. The ancient banyan, with roots 'deeper than our lives', symbolises tradition, heritage and the living past; its destruction becomes the central tragedy. Chitre uses violent, almost human imagery — 'massacred', 'mutilated', a 'defeated soldier', 'the great soul descended' — to insist that cutting a tree is an act of killing, not mere clearing of land. The seven-day sawing, the fleeing birds and insects, and the towering ruined trunk make the loss vivid and moving. Finally, the family's move to a treeless Bombay shows the triumph of barren modernity, while the banyan that 'grows and seethes in one's dreams' reveals that what is destroyed outside survives as guilt, memory and longing within. The poem is thus both an environmental lament and a meditation on how progress severs us from our roots.

Q. What does the banyan tree symbolise in the poem, and how does the final image of its aerial roots in the poet's dreams deepen this meaning?

In the poem, the banyan tree is a rich, multi-layered symbol. As India's most revered and long-living tree, it stands for tradition, religious faith and cultural heritage — values upheld by the grandmother. Its roots 'deeper than our lives' make it a symbol of the ancient, timeless past and of the poet's own ancestral roots and identity. As a shelter for 'insects and birds', it also represents the whole interconnected web of nature and life that human greed destroys. When it is mutilated and falls 'like a defeated soldier' with its 'great soul' departing, it becomes a symbol of murdered nature and of a dying way of life. The closing image powerfully deepens these meanings: in treeless Bombay, the banyan 'grows and seethes in one's dreams, its aerial roots / Looking for the ground to strike.' Here the uprooted tree mirrors the uprooted poet — displaced from his home, haunted by guilt and memory, and unable to find ground or belonging in the barren modern city. The aerial roots forever searching for soil symbolise the human soul's restless longing for roots, continuity and a connection with nature that modern life has severed. Thus the tree finally symbolises not just a lost tree but a lost world that lives on only as inner yearning.
