📖 Stanza-wise Explanation
But the shepherd Ajamil was more than a match for them.
He had a dog he was proud of,
and well he might;
and thirty thousand sheep
he counted as his own.
The poem opens by setting up the conflict: a pack of tigers constantly menaced the flock of sheep. But the shepherd Ajamil was no helpless victim — he was more than equal to the tigers. He owned a magnificent sheepdog of whom he was justly proud, and he tended an enormous flock of thirty thousand sheep that he counted as his own wealth and responsibility.

He counted them everyday
to see if they were all there.
He took good care of them
and the sheep flourished;
and the lambs were as good as money in the bank.
Ajamil's heart overflowed with affection for his sheep. Every single day he counted them carefully to make sure none had gone missing. Because he tended them so well, the flock thrived and prospered; the newborn lambs were as good as money safely deposited in a bank — a steadily growing, secure asset.

It was an offer Ajamil could not refuse.
The leader of the tigers said politely,
we are going to eat your sheep.
Said Ajamil, that's not very nice of you.
One night the tigers arrived intending to 'graze' upon his sheep — a darkly humorous, euphemistic way of saying they meant to devour them. The poet ironically calls it 'an offer Ajamil could not refuse', echoing the language of threats. The tiger-leader, with mock politeness, announced their plan to eat the sheep. Ajamil mildly replied that this was 'not very nice of you' — an absurdly understated, civil response to a deadly threat, heightening the comic irony.

and that was that.
Ajamil pleaded with them,
and the dog barked himself hoarse,
but the tigers kept eating the sheep.
Despite Ajamil's protest, the tigers were determined to eat his sheep, and that settled the matter. Ajamil begged and pleaded with them, while his faithful dog barked until it grew hoarse, but nothing could stop the tigers — they simply went on eating the sheep, indifferent to all appeals and resistance.

He went to god's house.
When god heard Ajamil's story,
he was full of pity.
The merciful god gave Ajamil
a tiger of his own.
Realising that pleading was futile, Ajamil went to god's house to seek help. When god heard Ajamil's tale of woe, he was filled with compassion. The merciful god gave Ajamil a tiger of his own — a striking and ironic gift, for to fight tigers god provides not justice or peace but another tiger, suggesting that power can only be answered by power.

and disguised as a tiger himself,
Ajamil's tiger struck terror
in the hearts of the other tigers.
The tigers were terrified;
they fled.
Here the poem turns gloriously absurd. The god-given tiger shaved off his moustache and, ironically, disguised himself 'as a tiger' — that is, he became Ajamil's tiger, a tiger working on the shepherd's side. This converted tiger struck terror into the hearts of the other tigers. The marauding tigers were so frightened by one of their own kind turned against them that they fled in panic.

Soon the tigers came back.
Once again they began to eat
the sheep of Ajamil.
But Ajamil and his tiger and his dog
made a fearsome trio.
The tigers' fear did not last long. Soon they returned and once more began eating Ajamil's sheep. But now Ajamil, his own tiger, and his loyal dog together formed a fearsome trio — a combined force that the raiding tigers had to reckon with. The balance of power had shifted.

that the tigers got tired of running after the sheep.
So the tigers and the sheep

They came to a sensible understanding.
The sheep agreed
to be eaten
but only once a week.
Now if a tiger felt hungry
he just went to the warden,
and he got a healthy sheep.
It was, the poet wryly notes, a 'historic' meeting at which both sides reached a 'sensible understanding' — biting irony, since the agreement is anything but sensible for the sheep. The sheep agreed to be eaten, but only once a week, in an orderly fashion. From then on, whenever a tiger felt hungry, he simply went to the warden (the official appointed to manage the arrangement) and was handed a healthy sheep.

The sheep were still alive.
And Ajamil the shepherd
found himself out of a job.
But then Ajamil was pretty resourceful.
He set himself up as a butcher;
he sold mutton
and got along quite well.
Everyone, the poem ironically claims, was content with the new arrangement: the tigers were happy because they were regularly fed, and the sheep felt reassured because they were 'still alive' — for now. The only one displaced was Ajamil, who, with no flock to guard, found himself out of a job. But resourceful as ever, Ajamil reinvented himself: he set up as a butcher, sold mutton, and prospered. The final twist is savagely ironic — the 'protector' of the sheep ends up slaughtering and selling them himself, exposing the hollowness of the whole 'sensible' compromise.

📝 Summary
'Ajamil and the Tigers' by Arun Kolatkar is a mock-heroic beast-fable. Ajamil is a shepherd who owns thirty thousand sheep, a proud sheepdog, and loves his flock dearly. A pack of tigers begins raiding and eating his sheep, and despite his pleading and his dog's barking, they will not stop. Helpless, Ajamil goes to god, who out of pity gives him 'a tiger of his own'. This god-given tiger shaves off his moustache, disguises himself as a tiger on Ajamil's side, and terrifies the other tigers into fleeing. But they soon return. Now Ajamil, his tiger and his dog form a fearsome trio. Since the sheep are many and the tigers few, the exhausted tigers and the sheep call a 'historic' meeting and reach a 'sensible understanding': the sheep agree to be eaten, but only once a week, supplied by a warden. The tigers are happy, the sheep are 'still alive', but Ajamil loses his job — so he resourcefully becomes a butcher, sells mutton and does quite well. Through this absurd, humorous tale, Kolatkar satirises power politics, the corrupt compromises struck between predators and prey, and how the so-called protector often becomes the exploiter.

💡 Central Idea
The central idea of the poem is a satire on power, compromise and exploitation. Using the comic fable of a shepherd, tigers and sheep, Kolatkar shows how conflicts between the powerful (tigers) and the weak (sheep) are often 'resolved' through self-serving deals that merely institutionalise the exploitation of the helpless, while the protector (Ajamil) cynically reinvents himself to keep profiting from the very flock he once guarded.

🎯 Themes
Power and the politics of compromise: The poem shows how the strong and the weak strike 'sensible understandings' that, behind a veneer of fairness and order, simply legitimise the continued exploitation of the vulnerable. The 'historic meeting' is a biting parody of political and diplomatic negotiations.

Exploitation of the helpless: The sheep, like ordinary powerless people, are reduced to commodities. Whether eaten by tigers or slaughtered by Ajamil the butcher, they remain victims; only the manner and schedule of their exploitation changes.

Self-interest and opportunism: Every character acts out of self-interest. The god-tiger changes sides, the tigers settle for convenience, and above all Ajamil cynically turns from protector to butcher, profiting from his sheep either way. The poem exposes how easily roles of guardian and exploiter blur.

Irony and the subversion of myth: Drawing playfully on the name 'Ajamil' (associated in legend with a sinner saved by divine grace), Kolatkar subverts the expectation of a moral or spiritual lesson. Here divine 'grace' is merely another tiger, and the 'happy ending' is a darkly comic accommodation with evil.

🧭 Message & Title
The poem's message is a cautionary, ironic one: those in power and those who claim to protect the weak frequently strike comfortable arrangements that serve their own interests while the truly helpless continue to be exploited under the guise of order, fairness and 'sensible' compromise. We are urged to look critically beneath the surface of such 'historic' settlements and recognise that a protector who profits from the protected may be no better than the predator.

The title 'Ajamil and the Tigers' names the two opposing forces whose conflict drives the poem — the shepherd Ajamil and the marauding tigers. It is deliberately ironic: the name 'Ajamil' recalls the pious legend of a sinner redeemed by uttering god's name, raising expectations of a moral, spiritual tale; instead Kolatkar gives us a worldly fable of power, compromise and butchery. The title also keeps Ajamil and the tigers in apparent opposition, yet the poem reveals that by the end they are partners in a system that exploits the sheep — so the 'and' linking them becomes quietly ironic. The title is therefore apt, both naming the central figures and hinting at the satire beneath the surface.

🪄 Literary Devices
The whole poem is pervaded by verbal and situational irony. Calling the meeting 'historic' and the deal 'sensible' is darkly ironic, since the agreement only formalises the killing of the sheep. This satirises political compromises that dress up exploitation as fair settlement.

The name alludes to the legendary Ajamila of the Bhagavata Purana, a great sinner saved by uttering the name of Narayana. Kolatkar invokes this pious association only to subvert it, denying the reader any neat spiritual moral.

The poem uses the age-old form of the animal fable, where animals and their keeper represent human social and political types — the powerful, the helpless and the opportunistic. This allegorical frame lets Kolatkar comment on real human society indirectly and humorously.

Kolatkar adopts the ancient beast-fable form, in which animals and their keeper stand for human types, to deliver a sharp political satire. The marauding tigers represent the powerful and predatory; the helpless sheep represent ordinary, exploited people; the shepherd Ajamil represents the self-interested authority who claims to protect them. At first the conflict is a simple one of predator and prey: the tigers eat the sheep, Ajamil pleads in vain, and even divine help (a god-given tiger) only restores a balance of fear, not justice. The turning point is the 'historic meeting' at which tigers and sheep reach a 'sensible understanding' — the sheep agree to be eaten once a week through a warden. Kolatkar's irony is biting: the words 'historic' and 'sensible' mock the grand language of political and diplomatic settlements, while the substance of the deal merely organises and legitimises the killing of the weak. The final twist seals the satire: Ajamil, the supposed protector, loses his job but reinvents himself as a butcher, profiting from the very sheep he once guarded. Through humour, understatement and the safe distance of the fable, Kolatkar exposes how power and authority strike comfortable arrangements among themselves, while the truly helpless are exploited under the comforting cover of order and fairness.

In Hindu tradition (the Bhagavata Purana), Ajamila is a notorious sinner who, at the moment of death, calls out the name of his son 'Narayana' — also a name of god — and is thereby redeemed by divine grace. The name thus carries strong associations of sin, divine mercy and spiritual salvation. Kolatkar deliberately gives his shepherd this loaded name to raise the reader's expectation of a moral or devotional tale, then completely subverts it. His Ajamil is no penitent sinner seeking god for salvation; he goes to god merely to protect his commercial flock, and the 'grace' god grants him is not spiritual deliverance but, comically, 'a tiger of his own'. There is no moral redemption at the end — instead Ajamil cheerfully becomes a butcher, killing the sheep himself. By evoking a sacred story only to replace its spiritual resolution with a worldly, cynical one, Kolatkar mocks easy moral and religious closure and turns a tale of salvation into a satire on self-interest and exploitation. The allusion thus deepens the poem's irony and its critique of hollow 'happy endings'.

It refers to the meeting between the tigers and the sheep. It is called 'historic' ironically, because instead of a noble landmark, it merely produces a deal that formalises the regular killing of the sheep.

The sheep agreed to be eaten, but only once a week, in an orderly way. Whenever a tiger was hungry, he would go to the warden and be given a healthy sheep.

The dominant device is irony (satire). Words like 'historic' and 'sensible understanding' praise an arrangement that is in fact a cruel, self-serving compromise legitimising the exploitation of the helpless sheep — mocking real political and diplomatic settlements.
