📖 Detailed Explanation

Abhimanyu was the brave son of Arjuna and Subhadra, and the nephew of Lord Krishna. Even as a boy he was renowned for his courage, skill in archery and devotion to dharma. While still in his mother's womb, he had heard Arjuna explain how to enter the dangerous Chakravyuh (a spiral battle formation). He learned the way in, but because his mother fell asleep, he could not hear how to come out of it.

During the Kurukshetra war, on a crucial day, the Kaurava commander Dronacharya arranged the army in the form of the Chakravyuh to capture Yudhishthira. Arjuna had been drawn away to another part of the battlefield by the Samshaptakas. None of the Pandava warriors except Arjuna and Krishna knew how to break this formation. In this difficult hour, young Abhimanyu came forward and bravely offered to break into the Chakravyuh.

Abhimanyu told Yudhishthira that he knew how to enter the formation but not how to come out. The Pandavas assured him that they would follow close behind him and protect him, so that together they would all return safely. Trusting them, Abhimanyu drove his chariot straight into the heart of the Chakravyuh, scattering the enemy soldiers with his fierce arrows.

As Abhimanyu rushed inside, Jayadratha, the king of Sindhu, blocked the gate of the formation. By the power of a boon he had received from Lord Shiva, he held back all the other Pandava warriors at the entrance and did not let them follow Abhimanyu. Thus the brave boy was left all alone inside the vast circle of enemy soldiers.

Alone and surrounded, Abhimanyu fought like a lion. He defeated and wounded many great warriors and filled the Kaurava army with fear. Seeing that no single warrior could overcome him, Drona, Karna, Duryodhana, Dushasana, Kripacharya and others surrounded him together. Against all the rules of fair war, many maharathis attacked one young boy at the same time.
