About the author: This story is drawn from the Mahabharat, the great epic traditionally attributed to the sage Maharshi Ved Vyas (Krishna Dwaipayan Vyas). The Mahabharat is the longest epic poem in the world and tells of the conflict between two branches of a royal family, the Pandavas and the Kauravas. Originally composed in Sanskrit, it has been retold for children in simple Hindi. 'Pandavon Ki Raksha' (The Protection of the Pandavas) is one such episode that shows the dangers the Pandavas faced and how their wise uncle Vidur and their own intelligence saved them.
📖 Detailed Explanation
After the death of King Pandu, his five sons — the Pandavas — grew up in Hastinapur along with their hundred cousins, the Kauravas, the sons of the blind king Dhritarashtra. The eldest Pandava, Yudhishthir, was honest and beloved by the people, who wished to see him become the future king. This made the eldest Kaurava, Duryodhan, burn with jealousy. Duryodhan could not bear the idea that the kingdom might pass to the Pandavas, and so he began to plot ways to harm and destroy them.

Duryodhan persuaded his father Dhritarashtra to send the Pandavas, along with their mother Kunti, to the city of Varanavat on the excuse of attending a festival. His real plan was wicked. He sent his trusted minister Purochan ahead and secretly had a grand palace built there out of lac (lakh), wax, oil, and other materials that catch fire easily. This palace was called the Lakshagriha — the House of Lac. Duryodhan intended to set it on fire one night while the Pandavas slept inside, so that everyone would believe they had died by accident.

But the Pandavas had a true well-wisher in their uncle Vidur, who was wise, just, and devoted to dharma. Vidur came to know of Duryodhan's plan. As the Pandavas set out for Varanavat, he spoke to Yudhishthir in a secret coded language that only the wise could understand, warning him that a weapon made not of steel but of fire could destroy the body, and that the one who stays alert and finds a way out, like the porcupine that digs many tunnels, can save himself. Yudhishthir, being intelligent, understood the hidden warning at once and became cautious.

When the Pandavas reached Varanavat and entered the beautiful palace, Yudhishthir at once smelled the lac, oil, and wax and understood that it was a trap meant to burn them. Vidur had also sent a clever miner who secretly dug a long underground tunnel from the palace, leading far away to safety, so that the Pandavas could escape when needed. The Pandavas pretended to live happily and suspect nothing, so that Purochan would not become alert.

After living there for nearly a year, the Pandavas decided to act before Duryodhan could strike. One night, they themselves set fire to the House of Lac. Before doing so, the mighty Bhim made sure his mother and brothers escaped safely through the secret tunnel. Purochan, who was sleeping in the palace, was caught in the very fire he had prepared for the Pandavas and died. The whole palace was burnt to ashes, and the people of Varanavat believed that the Pandavas had perished in the flames.

Through the dark tunnel, the Pandavas and their mother Kunti escaped into the forest. Strong Bhim carried his tired mother and brothers on his shoulders and walked swiftly through the dense jungle. In this way, by Vidur's wisdom, Yudhishthir's alertness, and Bhim's strength, the Pandavas were saved from Duryodhan's deadly plot. The world thought them dead, but they lived on in disguise, growing stronger for the trials that lay ahead.
