📖 Detailed Explanation

Vidur was the younger brother of King Dhritarashtra and Pandu, born to the sage Ved Vyas and a maidservant of the palace. Because of his birth he could not become king, but he was blessed with exceptional intelligence, righteousness and knowledge of dharma. He was appointed the chief minister of Hastinapur and served the kingdom with complete honesty and devotion.

Read in English

Vidur loved both the Pandavas and the Kauravas, but he always supported what was right. When the blind king Dhritarashtra favoured his own sons over the Pandavas, Vidur fearlessly told him the truth. He warned Dhritarashtra again and again that injustice towards the Pandavas would bring ruin to the whole family. Though his advice was wise, the king's love for his son Duryodhan often stopped him from following it.

A famous incident shows Vidur's foresight. When Duryodhan plotted to burn the Pandavas alive in the house of lac (Lakshagriha) at Varanavat, Vidur secretly came to know of the plan. He warned Yudhishthir through a coded, hidden message and arranged for a tunnel to be dug so that the Pandavas could escape. Because of Vidur's timely help, the Pandavas and their mother Kunti escaped safely from the burning house. This shows his deep love and protection for the righteous.

When the Pandavas lost everything in the game of dice and Draupadi was insulted in the royal court, Vidur was the only one who openly protested against this great injustice. He condemned Duryodhan and Dushasan and pleaded with Dhritarashtra to stop the evil. His words, full of moral courage, did not please the Kauravas, but Vidur never gave up the path of truth and dharma.

Vidur's teachings to Dhritarashtra, known as the 'Vidur Niti', are full of timeless wisdom. He taught that a wise person controls his anger, speaks the truth, forgives others, and never abandons dharma even in difficult times. He explained the qualities of a good ruler and a good human being. Even today, the Vidur Niti is respected as a guide to right conduct, good behaviour and successful living.

When the great war of Kurukshetra became unavoidable, Vidur was deeply pained. He had tried his best to bring about peace, but the pride of Duryodhan led the family to destruction. Vidur withdrew from the war and spent his later years in devotion and the company of the wise. His life teaches us that a true person of dharma always stands for justice, speaks the truth bravely, and never bows before wrong, even when those in power are against him.
