About the author: The Mahabharata is one of the two great epics of ancient India, traditionally attributed to the sage Veda Vyasa (Krishna Dvaipayana). It is the longest epic poem in the world and tells the story of the great war fought at Kurukshetra between the Pandavas and the Kauravas. This chapter, 'Yuddh ke Baad' (After the War), is a simplified prose retelling for school children, describing what happened once the eighteen-day battle ended.
📖 Detailed Explanation
After eighteen days the terrible war of Kurukshetra finally came to an end. The Pandavas had won, but their victory brought them little joy. The whole battlefield was filled with the bodies of brave warriors. Almost the entire Kaurava army, along with Duryodhana and his ninety-nine brothers, had been killed. Yudhishthira, the eldest Pandava, looked at the destruction and felt deep sorrow rather than the happiness of a victor.

Yudhishthira was heartbroken to think that the kingdom had been won at the cost of so many lives, including those of his own kinsmen, teachers and elders. He felt guilty and said that such a victory was no better than a defeat. The other Pandavas and Lord Krishna tried to console him, reminding him that they had fought for justice (dharma) and that it was his duty to rule the kingdom wisely and bring peace to the people.

The grief on the other side was even greater. Gandhari, the mother of the Kauravas, had lost all her hundred sons. Blindfolded for life out of devotion to her blind husband Dhritarashtra, she wept bitterly over the bodies of her children. The women of the royal household came to the battlefield and filled the air with their cries of mourning. The sight of the weeping mothers, wives and daughters moved everyone to tears.

Filled with sorrow and anger, Gandhari blamed Krishna for not stopping the war, even though he could have done so. In her grief she cursed him that one day his own Yadava clan would also destroy itself in a similar way. Krishna calmly accepted the curse, for he understood her pain as a mother who had lost everything. Yudhishthira and his brothers bowed humbly before Gandhari and Dhritarashtra and begged their forgiveness.

After performing the last rites of all the fallen warriors, Yudhishthira was crowned king of Hastinapur. Yet the lesson of the war stayed with everyone. The story shows that war brings only destruction, sorrow and loss on both sides — there are no real winners. True greatness lies not in conquering others but in ruling with justice, forgiveness and compassion, and in remembering the suffering that violence causes.

The title 'Yuddh ke Baad' (After the War) is apt because the chapter does not describe the fighting itself but what happens once the battle is over — the grief, mourning, repentance, forgiveness and the crowning of Yudhishthira. It focuses on the human cost and consequences of war rather than the war.

In this chapter Yudhishthira appears as the very image of dharma. Although he is the victor, he does not rejoice; instead he grieves for the lives lost and feels guilty for the destruction. His humility is seen when he and his brothers bow before Gandhari and Dhritarashtra to seek forgiveness. He honours the dead by performing their last rites and accepts the throne not out of greed but as a duty, resolving to rule justly and bring peace to the people. His compassion, honesty, humility and sense of responsibility show that true greatness lies in righteousness, not in conquest.
