Mahabharat Prose

Overview

📖 Detailed Explanation

After losing everything in the game of dice, the Pandavas had to accept a harsh condition: they had to spend twelve years in the forest (vanvaas) and the thirteenth year in 'agyatvaas', that is, living in disguise so that no one could recognise them. If the Kauravas discovered them during this final year, the whole exile would have to be repeated. So the thirteenth year was the most difficult and dangerous of all.

The Pandavas chose to spend this year in the kingdom of Virat (Matsya Desh), serving in the court of King Virat in disguise. Each of them took up a new identity and a humble role. Yudhishthira became Kank, a learned Brahmin who played dice with the king. Bhima became Vallabh, the royal cook, hiding his great strength behind the kitchen. Arjuna became Brihannala, a dance and music teacher for the princess Uttara. Nakula looked after the king's horses and Sahadeva took care of the cattle. Draupadi became Sairandhri, a maid serving Queen Sudeshna.

Living in disguise was not easy, especially for the proud and dignified Pandavas and for Draupadi, who had once been a queen. Trouble came when Kichaka, the queen's powerful brother and the commander of Virat's army, saw the beautiful Sairandhri (Draupadi) and began to trouble her. He wanted to marry her by force. Draupadi was deeply distressed but could not reveal who she really was, for that would destroy the secret of the agyatvaas.

Draupadi secretly went to Bhima and told him of her sorrow. Bhima, who could not bear to see her humiliated, made a plan. Draupadi told Kichaka to meet her at night in the dance hall. But in the darkness, it was Bhima, not Draupadi, who was waiting there. A fierce fight took place, and the mighty Bhima killed the wicked Kichaka. This act protected Draupadi's honour, but it also created a new danger, because Kichaka's death made people curious about who could be so strong.

Meanwhile, the Kauravas were searching everywhere for the Pandavas. When they heard that the mighty Kichaka had been killed, they suspected that Bhima might be hiding in Virat's kingdom. The Kauravas, along with their allies, attacked Virat's kingdom and carried off his cattle. When the young prince Uttar went out to fight, he became frightened on seeing the huge Kaurava army. It was Arjuna, still in the disguise of Brihannala, who took up his bow and revealed his true skill, defeating the great warriors of the Kaurava side.

Read in English

By the time the Kauravas attacked, the thirteenth year of agyatvaas had just been completed, so the Pandavas were no longer bound to keep their identity secret. King Virat was amazed and delighted to learn that the five brave servants in his court were really the famous Pandavas, and that Sairandhri was the noble Draupadi. To strengthen this new friendship, Virat happily married his daughter Uttara to Arjuna's son Abhimanyu. Thus the long and difficult period of exile and disguise came to an honourable end.
