Mahabharat Prose

Overview

📖 Detailed Explanation

Read in English

The story begins in the kingdom of Hastinapur. The king Vichitravirya was young and unmarried, and his elder brother Bhishma wished to find suitable brides for him. At that time, the king of Kashi (Varanasi) announced a swayamvar for his three daughters — Amba, Ambika and Ambalika. A swayamvar was a ceremony where a princess chose her own husband from among assembled princes and kings.

Read in English

Bhishma went to the swayamvar himself. Instead of letting the princesses choose, he forcefully carried away all three sisters — Amba, Ambika and Ambalika — in his chariot to make them brides for his brother Vichitravirya. The other kings who had gathered there challenged Bhishma, but he was a mighty warrior and defeated them all in battle, bringing the three princesses to Hastinapur.

On reaching Hastinapur, the eldest princess Amba revealed a secret. She told Bhishma that she had already chosen King Shalva of Saubha in her heart and wished to marry him. Bhishma, being just and honourable, respected her feelings and gave her permission to go to King Shalva. He sent her honourably to Shalva's kingdom.

But Amba's hopes were shattered. When she reached King Shalva, he refused to accept her. Shalva said that since Bhishma had won her in battle and carried her away, she now belonged to Bhishma, and his pride would not allow him to marry a woman whom another man had already taken. A heart-broken and insulted Amba returned, having been rejected by both sides.

Read in English

Amba returned to Bhishma and demanded that he marry her, since it was his act of carrying her away that had caused her rejection by Shalva. But Bhishma had taken a terrible vow of lifelong celibacy (the famous Bhishma Pratigya) — he could never marry. He explained that he was bound by his oath and could not break it for anyone. Amba felt that Bhishma was responsible for ruining her life.

Read in English

Filled with anger and a burning desire for revenge, Amba left the palace. She approached the great warrior-sage Parashurama, who was Bhishma's own teacher (guru), and begged him to force Bhishma to marry her or to punish him. Parashurama agreed and challenged Bhishma. A fierce battle took place between guru and disciple, but neither could defeat the other, and the war ended without result. Bhishma still refused to break his vow.

Read in English

Defeated in every attempt, Amba did not give up her resolve for revenge. She went to the forest and performed severe penance (tapasya) for years, praying to the gods, and vowed that she would be the cause of Bhishma's death. According to the epic, she was later reborn as Shikhandi in the kingdom of King Drupada. In the great Kurukshetra war, Bhishma — knowing Shikhandi's past — would not raise his weapons against Shikhandi, and with Shikhandi before him, Arjuna struck Bhishma down with arrows. Thus Amba's resolve was finally fulfilled, and the story shows how a single act set off a long chain of events.

💡 Central Idea

Read in English

The central idea of the story is that a single hasty or forceful action — even one done with good intentions and within one's own sense of duty — can deeply harm an innocent person and unleash a long chain of suffering and revenge. It also shows the tragic conflict between Bhishma's unbreakable vow and Amba's ruined life.

🎯 Themes

    Read in English

The power and burden of a vow (pratigya): Bhishma's oath of celibacy is so sacred to him that he will not break it even to undo the wrong done to Amba, showing both the greatness and the cost of keeping one's word.

Injustice and the suffering of women: Amba, though innocent, is treated as an object — won, given away and rejected — and her life is destroyed by the decisions of men, raising the theme of justice and a woman's dignity.

Revenge and the consequences of one's actions (karma): Amba's relentless quest for revenge, ending in her rebirth as Shikhandi and Bhishma's fall, shows how every action carries a consequence that may return after a long time.

🧭 Message & Title

Message / Moral

Read in English

The story teaches us that we must think carefully before acting, especially when our actions affect the lives of others. Force and pride lead to lasting harm, while honesty and respect for others' wishes prevent suffering. It also reminds us that promises and one's duty are important, but they must be balanced with compassion and justice.

Justification of the Title

Read in English

The title 'Amba aur Bhishma' is perfectly suited because the entire story revolves around the relationship and conflict between these two characters. Bhishma's act of carrying Amba away begins her tragedy, his vow prevents him from righting the wrong, and Amba's lifelong resolve for revenge against Bhishma forms the heart of the tale. Their intertwined fates give the story its meaning, so naming it after both of them is appropriate.

🪄 Literary Devices

Conflict (द्वंद्व) — “Amba's demand for marriage versus Bhishma's vow of celibacy”

The story is built on conflict — both the inner conflict of Bhishma between duty and compassion, and the outer conflict between Amba and Bhishma that drives the whole plot.

Irony (विडंबना) — “Amba is rejected by Shalva because of the very man, Bhishma, who let her go honourably”

There is deep irony in that Bhishma's act of generosity (letting Amba go) becomes the cause of her ruin, and that the unbeatable Bhishma is finally defeated through Amba.

Foreshadowing (पूर्वाभास) — “Amba's vow to be the cause of Bhishma's death”

Read in English

Amba's solemn vow during her penance hints at, and prepares the reader for, Bhishma's later fall in the Kurukshetra war through Shikhandi.

Characterisation (चरित्र-चित्रण) — “Bhishma shown as just yet bound by vow; Amba shown as determined and fearless”

Read in English

Through their words and actions, the writer vividly draws the noble but rigid Bhishma and the wronged but fiercely resolute Amba.

Pathos / Karuna Rasa (करुण रस) — “Amba being rejected by both Shalva and Bhishma”

Long Answer Questions
Q. Describe the whole tragic story of Amba. How did one action of Bhishma destroy her life?

Amba was the eldest princess of Kashi who had silently chosen King Shalva as her husband. At her swayamvar, Bhishma forcibly carried away her and her two sisters to marry them to his brother Vichitravirya. When Amba honestly revealed her love for Shalva, Bhishma respectfully sent her to him. But Shalva refused her, saying she had been won by Bhishma and now belonged to him. Rejected, Amba returned and asked Bhishma to marry her, but his vow of lifelong celibacy made this impossible. Thus, because of Bhishma's single act of carrying her away, Amba lost both Shalva and any chance of an honourable life. Burning with grief and anger, she sought revenge — first through Parashurama, who could not defeat Bhishma, and then through years of severe penance, vowing to cause Bhishma's death. She was reborn as Shikhandi, through whom Bhishma finally fell in the Kurukshetra war. Her story shows how one forceful action ruined an innocent woman's life and triggered a long chain of suffering and revenge.

Q. What values and lessons does the story 'Amba aur Bhishma' teach us?

The story teaches several important lessons. First, we must think before we act, because even a well-meant action done with force can deeply harm innocent people, as Bhishma's act harmed Amba. Second, we should respect the feelings and choices of others, especially women, rather than treating them as objects to be won or given away. Third, while keeping a promise or following one's duty is noble, it must be balanced with compassion and justice; Bhishma's rigid vow, though great, brought great suffering. Finally, the story warns that every action has consequences (karma) that may return after a long time, as Amba's revenge finally reached Bhishma in the great war. Thus the story urges thoughtfulness, justice, compassion and respect for others.

Q. Why did Amba say that Bhishma was the cause of Shalva rejecting her?

Q. What was Bhishma's reply, and why could he not marry Amba?

Q. What does this extract reveal about Bhishma's character?
