About the author: This story is taken from the great epic 'Mahabharat', traditionally composed by the sage Maharshi Ved Vyas (Krishna Dvaipayana). Ved Vyas is also credited with arranging the four Vedas and composing the eighteen Puranas. The Mahabharat, originally written in Sanskrit, is one of the longest epics in the world and narrates the story of the conflict between the Pandavas and the Kauravas. This particular episode of the 'Rajsooya Yagya' belongs to the Sabha Parva (the Book of the Assembly Hall) of the Mahabharat.
📖 Detailed Explanation

After establishing their kingdom at Indraprastha, the Pandavas grew in fame and prosperity under the just rule of Yudhishthira. To declare Yudhishthira's supremacy as an emperor (Samrat), the wise Krishna and the Pandavas decided to perform the Rajsooya Yagya, a grand royal sacrifice that only a sovereign king could conduct. But before this yagya could be performed, every other king of the land had to accept Yudhishthira's overlordship.

The greatest obstacle was Jarasandh, the mighty and cruel king of Magadh. He had imprisoned many kings and intended to sacrifice them to Lord Shiva. As long as Jarasandh lived, the Rajsooya Yagya could not succeed. Krishna devised a clever plan: instead of war, he, Bhim and Arjun went to Magadh disguised as Brahmins and challenged Jarasandh to a duel. Jarasandh chose to fight Bhim. After a long and fierce wrestling match lasting many days, Bhim finally killed Jarasandh, and the imprisoned kings were freed.

After Jarasandh's death, the four Pandava brothers — Arjun, Bhim, Nakul and Sahdev — set out in four directions to conquer all the kingdoms (the Digvijaya). They brought countless kings under Yudhishthira's authority and returned with vast wealth and tribute. Now the path was clear for the grand Rajsooya Yagya.

The yagya was conducted with great splendour. Kings, sages and honoured guests arrived from every corner of the land. Each Pandava and each guest was given a duty. When the time came to honour the most worthy guest with the first worship (agra-pooja), the elders, led by Bhishma, chose Lord Krishna. This greatly angered Shishupal, the king of Chedi, who insulted Krishna with harsh and abusive words. Krishna patiently bore one hundred insults as he had promised Shishupal's mother, but when the count was crossed, he hurled his Sudarshan Chakra and beheaded Shishupal.

With the death of Shishupal, the last disturbance ended, and the Rajsooya Yagya was completed successfully. Yudhishthira was now acknowledged as the supreme emperor (Chakravarti Samrat). The event displayed the unity, valour and righteousness of the Pandavas — but it also sowed seeds of jealousy in the heart of Duryodhan, who could not bear to see the Pandavas' glory, planting the seeds of the great war to come.

The title 'Rajsooya Yagya' is apt because the entire chapter revolves around this grand royal sacrifice performed by Yudhishthira. Every event — the killing of Jarasandh, the conquest of the four directions, and the slaying of Shishupal — happens to make this yagya possible and successful. The yagya is both the goal and the climax of the story, so the title perfectly captures its central subject.

The Rajsooya Yagya was a grand success that made Yudhishthira the supreme emperor and displayed the unity, valour and righteousness of the Pandavas. Kings from every direction attended and offered tribute, and the wise Krishna was honoured first. However, the glory and wealth of the Pandavas filled the heart of Duryodhan with deep jealousy. He could not bear to see his cousins rise so high, and this envy gradually hardened into hatred. Likewise, Shishupal's pride led to his death at the yagya itself. Thus, while the yagya marked the peak of the Pandavas' fortune, it also kindled the jealousy that would later grow into the great Mahabharat war, reminding us that pride and envy can turn even moments of triumph into causes of destruction.
