📖 Detailed Explanation

Kunti was the daughter of King Shoorsen of the Yadav clan. As a child she was given in adoption to King Kuntibhoj, a friend and relative of her father who had no children of his own. Because she grew up in the house of Kuntibhoj, she came to be known as 'Kunti'. Her childhood name was Pritha. In the palace of Kuntibhoj she was brought up with great love and was taught to be kind, dutiful and devoted to guests and elders.

Once the great sage Durvasa, who was famous for his short temper, came to stay in Kuntibhoj's palace. The king entrusted young Kunti with the duty of serving the sage. Kunti served Durvasa with utmost patience, care and devotion. Even when the sage tested her by making strange demands and arriving at odd hours, she never showed anger or weariness. Her steady, cheerful service pleased the sage greatly.

Pleased with her service, Durvasa gave Kunti a special mantra (a divine chant) as a boon. He told her that whenever she called upon any god with this mantra, that god would appear and bless her with a son. Kunti, who was still very young and curious, wished to test whether the mantra truly worked. One morning she chanted the mantra and called upon Surya, the Sun God.

To her astonishment, Surya appeared before her. Through the power of the boon, she was blessed with a radiant son who was born wearing natural armour (kavach) and earrings (kundal). This child was Karna. Being unmarried and afraid of society's blame, the frightened young Kunti placed the baby in a basket and floated him down a river. The child was found and raised by a charioteer named Adhirath and his wife Radha, and later became the great warrior Karna.

Read in English

When Kunti grew up, her swayamvar (a ceremony where a princess chooses her husband) was held. She chose Pandu, the king of Hastinapur, as her husband. Later, because of a curse upon Pandu, he could not have children of his own. With Pandu's permission, Kunti used Durvasa's mantra again. By calling upon Dharma, Vayu and Indra, she became the mother of three noble sons - Yudhishthir, Bheem and Arjun. She also kindly shared her mantra with Madri, Pandu's other wife, who became the mother of the twins Nakul and Sahadev.

Read in English

After Pandu's death, Kunti became both mother and father to the five Pandavas. She faced countless hardships - the burning of the lac house (lakshagrah), years of exile in forests, and the constant plotting of the Kauravas. Through all of this she remained calm, wise and brave. She raised her sons to be honest, dutiful and united. Her courage and her teaching of dharma (righteousness) made the Pandavas strong and virtuous.

Read in English

Even at the moment of Karna's birth-secret, Kunti's life shows the pain of difficult choices. Before the great war of Kurukshetra, she revealed to Karna that he was her eldest son and a brother of the Pandavas. Though Karna could not abandon his loyalty to Duryodhan, he promised his mother that he would not kill any of the Pandavas except Arjun. Thus Kunti emerges as a woman of deep love, patience, sacrifice and quiet strength - one of the most respected mothers in Indian literature.
