✍️ About the Author / Poet

📖 Detailed Explanation

The lesson begins after the famous game of dice. Yudhishthir, the eldest Pandava, is tricked by the cunning Shakuni into playing dice on behalf of the Kauravas. One by one Yudhishthir loses his wealth, his kingdom, his brothers, himself, and finally even Draupadi. As a result of this defeat, the Pandavas are condemned to spend twelve years in exile in the forest and a thirteenth year living incognito (agyatvaas), where no one must recognise them.

Read in English

The Pandavas leave Hastinapur dressed in tree-bark and deer-skin like hermits. The people of the city are filled with sorrow to see the noble princes leaving in such a sad state. Draupadi, who has been deeply insulted in the royal court, leaves with her hair untied, vowing not to tie it until the wrong done to her is avenged. The brothers cover their faces and walk with bowed heads, each expressing his inner feelings in his own way.

On the way the brothers reveal their feelings through symbolic gestures. The mighty Bhim walks gazing at his powerful arms, showing that he longs to use his strength to crush the enemy. Arjun scatters sand grains, suggesting the countless arrows he will one day shower upon the Kauravas. The twins Nakul and Sahdev smear their faces and bodies, so that their handsome looks may not attract attention. Through these actions each one silently expresses his anger and his resolve for the future.

Read in English

The wise Vidur, who always stood for truth and justice, is deeply pained by the injustice done to the Pandavas. He helps and guides them, and arranges to look after their mother Kunti, who is too old to bear the hardships of forest life. Kunti stays back in Hastinapur in Vidur's care, blessing her sons and praying for their safe return. The parting of mother and sons is an emotional moment in the story.

Read in English

During their forest life, the Pandavas face many hardships but never lose their patience or their faith in dharma. Yudhishthir remains calm and righteous, accepting the situation as the result of his own mistake. The forest years test their endurance, unity and devotion to truth.
