📖 Detailed Explanation

Read in English

Karna was the eldest son of Kunti. Before her marriage, Kunti had received a special boon from the sage Durvasa by which she could call upon any god she wished. Out of childlike curiosity she called upon Surya, the Sun-god, and a radiant child was born to her. This child was Karna. Frightened of society's blame, the unmarried Kunti placed the baby in a basket and floated him away on a river.

Read in English

The basket floated along the river until a charioteer named Adhirath and his wife Radha found the child. Having no children of their own, they raised him with great love. Because the baby was born wearing natural armour (kavach) and earrings (kundal) on his body, he shone brilliantly. He was therefore brought up as the son of a charioteer (suta), and for this reason people often called him 'Sutaputra'.

Karna grew up to be a great warrior and an expert archer. He wished to learn advanced weaponry, but because he was thought to be of low birth, the famous teacher Dronacharya refused to teach him. Determined, Karna went to Parshuram and, by hiding his true identity, learned from him. When Parshuram discovered the truth, he cursed Karna that he would forget his learning at the most crucial moment. Despite such misfortunes, Karna never gave up his pursuit of excellence.

Read in English

Duryodhan, the eldest of the Kauravas, recognised Karna's valour and crowned him king of Anga. From that day Karna became Duryodhan's closest friend and remained faithful to him forever. This loyalty became the guiding principle of Karna's life, even though it placed him on the side of the Kauravas in the great war against his own brothers, the Pandavas.

Read in English

Karna was renowned above all for his charity (daan). He never refused anyone who came to him asking for something. Knowing this, Indra, the king of gods and father of Arjun, came to Karna disguised as a Brahmin and asked for his natural armour and earrings, which made Karna invincible. Although Surya had already warned Karna of this trick, Karna kept his vow of charity and gladly cut the kavach and kundal from his own body and gave them away. Pleased with his greatness, Indra gave him a powerful weapon in return.

Read in English

Before the war of Kurukshetra, Kunti came to Karna and revealed that she was his real mother and that the Pandavas were his own brothers. She begged him to join their side. But Karna, loyal to Duryodhan who had honoured him in his hour of need, refused to betray his friend. He, however, promised Kunti that he would not kill any of her sons except Arjun, so that she would always remain the mother of five sons.

In the great war Karna fought bravely. On the final day, as fate would have it, the wheel of his chariot sank into the earth. While he was struggling to lift it, helpless and unarmed, Arjun shot the fatal arrow. Thus the curses and the deceit of his enemies combined to bring about Karna's death. He died as one of the most generous, courageous and tragic heroes of the Mahabharat, remembered forever for his loyalty and his unmatched charity.

Long Answer Questions
Q. Describe Karna's character with examples from the lesson. Why is he called a tragic hero?

Karna is one of the noblest characters of the Mahabharat. He is a brave and skilled archer, generous beyond measure, and intensely loyal. His generosity is seen when he gives away even his life-protecting kavach and kundal to Indra in disguise, despite Surya's warning. His loyalty shines when he refuses to abandon Duryodhan, who had honoured him, even after learning that the Pandavas are his own brothers. Yet his life is full of injustice and misfortune: he is abandoned at birth, insulted as a 'Sutaputra', refused training by Dronacharya, and cursed by Parshuram. In the end, when his chariot wheel sinks into the earth, he is killed by Arjun while helpless and unarmed. Because his great virtues are repeatedly defeated by fate, curses and the deceit of others, Karna is remembered as a truly tragic hero.
