About the author: The story of Jarasandh is an episode from the great Sanskrit epic 'Mahabharat', traditionally attributed to the sage Veda Vyas (Krishna Dvaipayana Vyas). The Mahabharat is one of the two great epics of India and is regarded as the longest poem ever composed. The Jarasandh episode comes from the Sabha Parva (the Book of the Assembly Hall) and is retold here in simple Hindi prose for young readers.
📖 Detailed Explanation
Jarasandh was the powerful and cruel king of Magadha. He had grown so strong that almost all the kings of the land feared him and bowed before him. Jarasandh was an enemy of Lord Krishna. He had attacked Krishna's city of Mathura many times. To save his people, Krishna had finally moved the Yadavas far away to the city of Dwarka on the sea-shore.

Jarasandh had a terrible plan. He had captured many kings and kept them as prisoners. He wished to capture one hundred kings in all and then offer them as a human sacrifice to please Lord Shiva. This cruel intention spread fear and sorrow among all the kings of the land.

At this time, the Pandava king Yudhishthir wished to perform the great Rajasuya Yajna, a sacrifice which would make him emperor over all other kings. But Krishna explained that this yajna could not be completed while Jarasandh lived, for no king could be called supreme as long as such a powerful enemy held a hundred kings in prison. So the death of Jarasandh became necessary.

Krishna devised a clever plan. He, along with the two mighty Pandava brothers Bhim and Arjun, set out for Magadha. They did not go as kings dressed in royal clothes, but disguised themselves as Brahmins (holy men). In this disguise they entered Jarasandh's capital and reached his palace.

Jarasandh, who was generous towards Brahmins, welcomed the three guests with respect. But he noticed that their bodies were strong and marked like those of warriors, not like gentle Brahmins. He grew suspicious and asked them who they really were. Krishna then revealed the truth — that they were Krishna, Bhim and Arjun, and that they had come as his enemies because of his cruel deeds against the kings.

Krishna challenged Jarasandh to a duel and gave him a choice — to release all the captured kings, or to fight one of them in single combat. Proud Jarasandh refused to free the kings. He chose to fight, and he chose the mighty Bhim as his opponent, since he too was famous for his great strength in wrestling.

A fierce wrestling match began between Bhim and Jarasandh. For many days the two mighty warriors fought without rest, striking, gripping and throwing each other. Neither could defeat the other, for both were equally strong. Krishna watched closely, for he knew the secret of Jarasandh's birth.

Jarasandh had been born in two separate halves of a body, which a demoness named Jara had joined together to make him whole. Because of this, he could only be killed by tearing his body apart into two halves again. Krishna gave Bhim a silent signal — he picked up a small stick or leaf, tore it into two and threw the pieces in opposite directions. Bhim understood the hint at once.

Following Krishna's hint, Bhim lifted Jarasandh high into the air, slammed him to the ground, and tore his body into two halves, throwing the pieces far apart so that they could not join again. In this way the cruel king Jarasandh was finally killed. The hundred kings held in his prison were set free, and they were grateful to Krishna and the Pandavas. With Jarasandh gone, Yudhishthir was able to perform his Rajasuya Yajna and become emperor.

The story teaches us several important lessons. First, cruelty and tyranny never last; a ruler who oppresses others will finally be destroyed. Second, pride and arrogance lead to one's own ruin, as we see in Jarasandh, who refused to free the kings even when he could have. Third, the story shows that strength alone is not enough — it must be guided by wisdom and good strategy, as Bhim's power succeeded only because of Krishna's intelligence. Finally, it teaches us that good ultimately triumphs over evil, and that helping the oppressed and standing for justice is the duty of the strong.
